Communication Breakdown

Communications from the world of, er, communications. And other stuff.

Adobe Creative Suite 5.5, the latest package of the company's graphics, video and web tools, has gone on sale.

Creative Suite 5.5 (CS5.5) includes updated functionality for creating HTML 5 and Flash apps, and makes it possible to write for Android, BlackBerry Tablet OS and Apple iOS devices. Made available on Tuesday, it is also the first version of CS that is available on a subscription model.

"Adobe is leading the charge for HTML5 authoring with new capabilities in Creative Suite 5.5 that will radically enhance the delivery of HTML content across multiple browsers — on the desktop, tablets and smartphones," Adobe creative and interactive solutions chief David Wadhwani said in a statement on Tuesday, adding that creators of mobile apps would be able to write across platforms "without having to start from scratch for every device".

The most fully-featured version of CS5.5 is the Master Collection, which is available for £2,303 excluding VAT. CS5.5 Design Premium and CS5.5 Production Premium both require an outlay of £1,509, and CS5.5 Web Premium costs £1,429.

Curious, would old-media-coming-to-new-media-types (for want of a better phrase) go with this over an existing iPad-friendly solution like Pixelmag? http://t.co/lBZqmyl

It is also important to raise awareness regarding Apple's scams and abuses related to mobile application and digital entertainment markets, their strategy to destroy the web by kicking users out of the web into Apple's walled garden taxed at 30% is outrageous! Apple's ban of Flash is not acceptable, turning consumers and developers into collateral damages in a corporate war is not acceptable! Join the fight and follow me on Twitter "flexengineer".

@Geoff - us old-media types who have used InDesign for years and use it for print titles wil be overjoyed to be able to take a paper magazine and add more interactive content to the tablet title and publish that on iPad, PlayBook, Android and whatever else without having to lay the whole darn page out again every time. Assuming that there is a market for tablets beyond the iPad which remains unproven.

@Stephane: "...Apple's...strategy to destroy the web..."

Apple's support for and promotion of HTML5 is, in fact, an endorsement (and boon) to the open web philosophy. I am pleased that at least Apple is pushing things along this direction. I'm also pleased to see that Adobe has finally seen the light and now supports HTML5 authoring in its latest CS 5.5 edition.

"Apple's ban of Flash is not acceptable"

It's not only acceptable, it's commendable! What is not acceptable is Flash's impact on energy consumption, and system performance, reliability, security, and privacy. I wish all platform owners and their partners would shun Flash. The world would be a better place...
