Talkback
How did you manage to get Jolicloud 1.0, or is that a silly question? I'm still on the pre-release.
Unfortunately, I had no partitions left, so I had to install to a USB drive. As a result, some functions are rather slow - particularly adding Apps.
Consequently, I haven't formed an opinion yet other than it seems rather better than the competition.
I got an invite from the company for editorial purposes.
The pre-final version was indeed better than the competition in many respects, but the final version introduces an entirely new user experience.
A couple more thoughts have occurred to me. One is that Android may develop as a netbook OS (it certainly wasn't when I tried out Acer's first implementation), so let's see whether Google produces its own Chrome OS competitor. Let's see.
The other is that I'm very impressed with Jolicloud's approach of being a Linux distro with the company also providing the OS's core service. There's a business model in there somewhere...
That top-left pulldown menu has disappeared for me - I get the impression from their FAQ that they really don't want you installing your own software or fiddling around behind the scenes, they want you to use what they provide (which isn't an attitude people coming from a Linux direction will appreciate, but it won't bother the vastly greater number of people who are happy with Facebook, Google Docs etc and not bothered about what is going on in the background). I'd be happy to install this for my mother to use with no further support, and I can't say that about many operating systems.
From David's excellent description and impressions, and my own previous experience, Jolicloud is starting to sound more and more like something that could/should be pre-installed by an OEM on netbooks/sub-notebooks/notebooks for sale to the general public. This is certainly NOT a "bad thing", something like that might be just what the Linux market needs for a boost. A lot of the things that Jolicloud has fixed, or already integrated, or otherwise made simpler, easier, or transparent, can make a huge difference in an new users experience. Likewise, reducing the possibilities for a user to create problems by making changes "behind the scenes", and trying to provide them with options they really need through a "package selection/installer" utility is something that an OEM would likely find appealing.
The critical question is, are there OEMs who are interested in this, are there deals already in the making, will we see something with Jolicloud preloaded on the general market sometime soon? These are the same questions that one could ask about Moblin/MeeGo, and honestly based on my few attempts with that, I think a lot of the things that Jolicloud has gotten right are exactly the things that Moblin/MeeGo has gotten wrong. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Jolicloud's founder/CEO responded to the few quibbles I raised in my blog. See the update above.
Incidentally, if you press the "Menu" key, the familiar Ubuntu applications menu will appear, so I am finally able to get to a shell prompt. I still think Jolicloud's strength is in the Apple-style "you should only use what we've approved" attitude, rather than being an operating system for those of us who like fooling around with operating systems.
I am an ex-Jolicloud user who might come back if the update problems have been resolved. I gave up after SEVERAL bouts with the ineffective updater, falling back to apt-get after spending time searching for the answer. BTW, I've been using Linux full-time for over 3 years, so this isn't due to unfamiliarity. But the website still show a pre-final version so where did you get a 1.0 version? I will reconsider and test Jolicloud once the 1.0 release is available.
@ALanBCohen - Updates are mroe automated now, I think. I got my update from the company so I could review it, but they're putting lots of invites on this page each day now http://my.jolicloud.com/upgrade
Sadly my netbook doesnt have a menu key, so the 1.0 version has crippled itself IMHO by emulating the iPad too much
Very interesting operatsionnuya system. Now use it on my old netbook. Review and test, faq jolicloud os in Russian.
