Mobile phone sales dip while smartphones boom

Worldwide sales of mobile phones to end users fell by 2 percent to 419.1 million units in the first quarter of 2012, according to Gartner, mainly due to a slowdown in sales to users in the Asia/Pacific region. However, smartphones sales boomed, growing by 44.7 percent to 144.4 million units. South Korea's Samsung became the largest supplier of both mobile phones and smartphones, as Android took more than half the... Read more

Microsoft's score card for Smoked by Windows Phone

Microsoft has published some numbers about the challenges held as part of its Smoked by Windows Phone marketing campaign, which started at the Consumer Electronics Show in January and is currently touring the UK. Obviously it's winning most of the challenges, or it wouldn't be doing it.

When Microsoft published its blog post last week, it said it had won 50,675 challenges and lost 638 for a 98 percent score.... Read more

Deaf users campaign for US-style video relay service

After a decade of having their needs neglected by telecoms providers, leaders of the UK's deaf community have written an open letter published in today's Times newspaper. They are campaigning for a universally-accessible video relay service of the sort that the Americans have operated successfully for the past 10 years. This would enable British Sign Language users to make and receive calls at any time, with no... Read more

UK PC market grows as Western Europe declines

The British PC market enjoyed a small increase in shipments in this year's first quarter, according to Gartner's preliminary numbers. However, Western Europe as a whole -- which includes the distressed markets in Italy, Greece, Portugal and Spain -- saw a 3 percent decline to 15.5 million units. Sales of business PCs grew slightly but "consumers continued to focus their spending on alternative computing devices... Read more

O2 expands free Wi-Fi into Costa

O2 has announced a deal to provide free Wi-Fi to Costa coffee shops, which it says is "the UK’s largest coffee shop chain". With O2 already providing Wi-Fi access in McDonald's, Café Rouge, All Bar One and other outlets, it is increasing the competition with BT's OpenZone and The Cloud. BSkyB-owned The Cloud supplies many Caffè Nero, Pret A Manger, EAT, Pizza Express and other outlets, and used to provide free... Read more

Internet Explorer is still gaining market share

Microsoft's Internet Explorer has increased its market share for the third time in the past four months, according to numbers based on website access provided by Netmarketshare. The gains are very small, but the graph shows an unusual -- for IE -- upward trend. However, Windows XP has continued to stay ahead of Windows 7 in operating system market share.

The Netmarketshare share numbers published today,... Read more

Ubuntu 12.04 aims at enterprise and cloud

Canonical has released Precise Pangolin, version 12.04 LTS of its Ubuntu Linux distribution, saying that it is aimed at enterprise users and cloud computing in particular. However, the open source company is still presenting the 32-bit version as the default download, and was unwilling to provide further news on its ambitions to get 12.04 into tablets and TV sets.

LTS designates a version with long term... Read more

Kindle Fire takes half the US Android tablet market

Amazon's Kindle Fire has taken more than half of the US market for Android tablets, according to research released by ComScore today (Thursday). This has reduced the market share of most but not all rival tablets, with the Asus Transformer holding up and Lenovo's IdeaPad growing from a small base. Either way, it's bad news for Google that a forked version of its software -- which has a different user interface and... Read more

Microsoft SkyDrive users: claim your free 25GB

Microsoft updated its long-running SkyDrive cloud-based storage system this week, but the improvements came at a cost: Microsoft slashed its 25GB of free online storage to only 7GB. However, more than 100 million existing SkyDrive users need not lose out. By logging on to the service now, they can claim a free upgrade to 25GB, which means they don't lose out.

This is important because SkyDrive is being... Read more

UK is being smoked by Windows Phone

Microsoft's 'Smoked by Windows Phone' challenge, introduced at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, has finally reached the UK under a new name, 'Dare To Live'. Microsoft's Windows Phone teams kicked off the campaign this weekend in London, visiting Oxford Street, Camden, Shoreditch, Tottenham Court Road and Westfield (White City). Another 10 cities have been scheduled in a campaign that runs into... Read more
