Marlinspike suffers RSA authentication woes

Authentication expert Moxie Marlinspike had trouble getting into the RSA security conference in San Francisco on Monday, due to a lack of ID.

Marlinspike, who was due to speak at the conference, arrived to register on Monday afternoon shortly after ZDNet UK. Marlinspike was asked by the registration staff if he had any picture ID, such as a driving licence, to prove who he was. Marlinspike, who is a noted... Read more

Steorn: behind the scenes of free energy dreams

It's hard to say what's happened to Steorn, Irish inventors of Orbo, once claimed to be an over-unity generator that broke the laws of physics but now barely worthy of couple of fuzzy paragraphs on the web site.

You can, however, enjoy their latest device - a water heater called Heptaheat. It heats water up really quickly, and in useful quantities: let nobody claim all those millions of euros were wasted.... Read more

Software defined radio makes for a happy hack

"So, Rupert," said the company. "Twenty years on the job. Ask for anything and it shall be yours."

I thought for a moment. "A pony, a robotic kitten made out of gold and water-lilies, and a Flex-1500 Software Defined Radio, please."

There's apparently some health-and-safety issue with the pony, and the robo-kitten's still in beta after it burned a small village to the ground with tail-mounted lasers, but... Read more

Petition to pardon Alan Turing in Turing Year

A Leeds University professor is backing an e-petition asking the UK government to pardon computer pioneer Alan Turing, who worked on code breaking at Bletchley Park during World War II. This follows on from an e-petition launched two years ago, which resulted in prime minister Gordon Brown apologising for Turing's treatment.

Turing, a homosexual, was convicted of gross indecency in 1952, imprisoned, and given a... Read more

Wii U controller packs in tablet-like features

Nintendo has launched a new console that includes a 6.2-inch touchscreen controller alongside traditional hardware controller buttons.

The controller can provide a mirror of the display connected to the console or can display information not shown on screen. Nintendo revealed the device at the E3 gaming conference in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

In addition to displaying or augmenting information displayed on... Read more

This is not an April Fool

These two pictures are not faked in any way. They show an iPhone and an iPad running Windows 7.

The Apple devices are running virtual Windows 7 desktops courtesy of Citrix's XenDesktop, and specifically the Citrix Receiver universal client.

Treasury has 'decided not to pursue' £22bn Foundation X proposal

The UK government will not take up the apparent offer of billions of interest-free pounds from a mysterious organisation called Foundation X, a Treasury spokesperson told ZDNet UK on Friday.

The existence of the offer was detailed on Monday in the House of Lords by Lord James of Blackheath, who said the foundation was willing to pump at least £22bn into government coffers by Christmas. According to the... Read more

Tory peer hints at shadowy 'Foundation X', links to IRA money laundering

Here's a question: if a respected Tory fixer and peer carefully detailed an enormous and far-reaching conspiracy, what would the reaction of the public be?

That's what seems to have happened on Monday in the House of Lords, anyway: read from column 1538 in Hansard, the official record of such things. In that transcript, Lord James of Blackheath spells out how a shadowy 'Foundation X' offered to pay off the... Read more

RIM takes ZDNet UK on a magical pixie ride

Well, I'm here in Bochum, Germany, on a press trip with Research In Motion. I can't tell you yet why we're here (hint: it's BlackBerry-related, but nothing that I couldn't write up from ZDNet UK towers) because the embargo hasn't lifted yet.

I can however tell you that we've just been shown around a section of RIM's Bochum R&D facility. We saw various screens and machines that you would no doubt like to see.... Read more

Windows 7 and 1,080 missing trees

Windows 7 launches officially next week (22 October), and to mark the upcoming event, three bulky packages arrive from publisher Wiley. Yes, Windows 7's assault on the world's forests is underway.

First out of the heavy-duty jiffy bag is Windows 7 Secrets (£29.99) by Paul Thurrott (he of the SuperSite for Windows) and Rafael Rivera (who is behind the techie WithinWindows blog). Weighing in at 1.58kg and... Read more
