Darth Vader brought his own device...

A few weeks ago I wrote a blog piece called "Bring Your Own Delusion (BYOD)".
In this piece I explored the thought that reactions to recent BYOD noise are largely emotional.

This time round I want to take a look at something less emotional.

While the story of Darth Vader’s fight against the Rebellion is not a true and accurate representation of the average organization, there are parallels to be drawn.... Read more

Android 5.0 Jelly Bean to arrive before December

Google will work with multiple manufacturers to provide early access to new builds of its Android operating system and develop a range of new flagship Nexus smartphone and tablets that could launch before the end of November, according to reports.

The company has previously worked with just one device manufacturer at a time to produce a flagship handset, such as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, but Google will soon be... Read more

HTC One V

HTC's One range of handsets comprises three models. There's the flagship HTC One X with its quad-core processor and vast 4.7in., 720-by-1,280-pixel screen, and the smaller, perhaps more manageable, HTC One S with its 4.3in. display.

The third HTC One handset has rather slipped under the radar, but the One V just might be the best of all. For the reasonably affordable price of £238 (inc. VAT) from online... Read more

Apple rebrands iPad 4G as 'Wi-Fi + Cellular' for UK

Apple has removed all references to '4G' data speeds on its new iPad following a similar move in Australia.

The company told ZDNet UK in a statement that it had removed references to 4G connectivity to simplify customers' understanding of the product, as different countries use different terms for wireless standards.

"The new iPad supports many high speed networks around the world, including LTE in the... Read more

LG reveals UK release timing for Optimus 4X HD

LG's Optimus 4X HD Android smartphone will go on sale in the UK next month, the manufacturer said on Tuesday.

Revealed in February, the Optimus 4X HD is a quad-core device with a 4.7-inch screen that uses in-plane switching (IPS) technology to allow wide viewing angles. It runs Android 'Ice Cream Sandwich' 4.0 and, according to LG's Korean newsroom, it will come to Europe in June.

Virgin Atlantic lets airborne passengers use mobiles

Some passengers on Virgin Atlantic can now make mobile phone calls, send and receive text messages and check their emails from the airline's planes.

Virgin Atlantic announced the move on Monday, making it the first UK carrier to let passengers use their own phones for voice calls in the air. However, other airlines such as Emirates have used the same technology for years, and BA also offers text and data... Read more

To BYOD or not to BYOD – that is the question!

There are two main schools of thought out there in the industry concerning BYOD: the BYOD school argues that it is inevitably the way forward across the enterprise; the Not to BYOD school forecasts that BYOD is not as much of a good thing as perhaps originally anticipated, bringing with it security, cost and data management issues.

The Aberdeen Group recently weighed into the argument with some research that... Read more

Dell launches cloud printing app for Android

Dell has released an Android app that lets users print to network-connected Dell printers, giving the manufacturer a rival to similar cloud-based services from the likes of HP.

The company announced the Dell Mobile Print app on Thursday, explaining that it can print directly from other productivity, email, browser, photo and PDF apps. The app runs from any iteration of the mobile OS from Android 2.1 upwards.... Read more

Nokia pulls out of free London Wi-Fi scheme

Nokia has reportedly pulled out of a scheme to give free Wi-Fi access to Londoners.

The handset manufacturer joined a pilot of the project, which put Wi-Fi hotspots on phone boxes, last November. However, the other two companies in that pilot, location-based advertising service Selective Media and phone box owner Spectrum Interactive, have now announced an extension of the scheme that does not involve Nokia....
