Darth Vader brought his own device...

A few weeks ago I wrote a blog piece called "Bring Your Own Delusion (BYOD)".
In this piece I explored the thought that reactions to recent BYOD noise are largely emotional.

This time round I want to take a look at something less emotional.

While the story of Darth Vader’s fight against the Rebellion is not a true and accurate representation of the average organization, there are parallels to be drawn.... Read more

Twitter wants to work with UK government

Social network Twitter has said it wants to work more closely with UK policy makers, according to the BBC.

Twitter, which has over 10 million UK users, is recruiting a UK public policy manager, the BBC said on Tuesday.

The micro-blogging service has attracted parliamentary scrutiny over injunctions, and gave evidence to a parliamentary committee which in March called for self-censorship by search engines and... Read more

SMBs adopt the cloud without security

Security has take another knock as a prime barrier to the adoption of cloud computing.

A survey commissioned by Microsoft (whose involvement was not revealed to the respondees) found that small to medium-sized businesses might gain a fair amount from adopting cloud computing. The survey, conducted with organisations in Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore and the USA, reckoned that most organisations viewed a... Read more

Mobile porn filters catch innocent content, says report

Filters for adult content on mobile networks are blocking innocent websites, according to a report by the Open Rights Group and the London School of Economics.

Technical measures such as blacklists, designed to filter content that is inappropriate for children, have captured a number of websites that have been misclassified as 'adult' by mobile operators, the Open Rights Group (ORG) said in a report (PDF) on... Read more

Amnesty websites compromised in Gh0st RAT attack

Amnesty International websites in the UK and Hong Kong have been compromised and made to serve a variant of malware known as Gh0st RAT, security researchers have said.

Websense revealed the hack of Amnesty's UK site in a blog post on Friday, saying it had picked up the incident between 8-9 May. Amnesty dealt with that breach before the public announcement was made, but Websense subsequently updated its post to... Read more

Heathrow eGates added to border confusion

Biometric 'eGates' intended to speed immigration checks at Heathrow have in fact slowed passengers down, even though the gates had been altered to allow false positives, according to independent chief inspector of borders and immigration John Vine.

A 2011 inspection found that the 'tuning' on the three facial-recognition eGates at Terminal 3 had been 'turned down', allowing incidents such as a wife to pass... Read more

IT security? You're doing it wrong!

Sometimes change is abrupt, sometimes it just sneaks up on you.

For quite some time I've been thinking about the impact of many different trends on the world of IT, as virtualisation and cloud combine with new devices and service-oriented application development to change the way we build and deliver applications. It's one of those megatrends that we can see pushing its way through the industry, leaving trails... Read more
