Darth Vader brought his own device...

A few weeks ago I wrote a blog piece called "Bring Your Own Delusion (BYOD)".
In this piece I explored the thought that reactions to recent BYOD noise are largely emotional.

This time round I want to take a look at something less emotional.

While the story of Darth Vader’s fight against the Rebellion is not a true and accurate representation of the average organization, there are parallels to be drawn.... Read more

Squadmail unveils shared email-folder tool

Squadmail, a service that lets users set up shared email folders that work in any client, has gone into public beta.

The tool creates the shared folders at the IMAP server level, making the choice of client irrelevant. Squadmail says the service removes the need for CCs and forwarded emails, and claims the early testing phase picked up users in more than 70 countries, with around 500 of them corporate... Read more

Sage to take ERP tools into the cloud with Azure

The UK software company Sage is to take on its enterprise resource planning rivals in the cloud by developing some of its products to run on Microsoft's Windows Azure platform.

According to the company, the first such product in the UK will be Sage 200, a suite that encompasses business intelligence (BI), customer relationship management (CRM) and financial management software. Sage, which only entered the... Read more

Microsoft shuts Office Live Small Business

Microsoft has shut down Office Live Small Business, the hosted website creation and business email platform that has since been superseded by Office 365.

Office 365 took over from Office Live Small Business (OLSB), Live@edu and BPOS in late 2010. Microsoft said months ago that OLSB would close at the end of April, and this has indeed taken place, with access to OLSB services and sites built using the service... Read more

How businesses can drive online customer interaction

No one can argue that positive customer interaction is essential to business success. As consumers spend more time online, it is becoming increasingly important for businesses to understand how their target audiences prefer to engage online in order to design the most effective strategy for positive engagement. So, what should businesses consider?

Our recent research with Chadwick Martin Bailey provides more... Read more

Bring Your Own Delusion (BYOD)

Everyone I speak to these days is asking me to talk to them about BYOD (Bring your Own Device) and how it impacts on corporate networks and CIO’s decision making processes.

What to me is the most interesting thing is that from any surfing around and looking for comments on the Internet, you’ll find two very distinct schools of thought have evolved and they seem to be pretty equally balanced.

The first... Read more

Microsoft cuts Office 365 pricing due to 'efficiency'

Microsoft has cut its pricing for Office 365, less than a year after introducing the cloud-based productivity suite.

Most of the Office 365 for enterprise plans saw price cuts of up to 20 percent on Wednesday, in a move Microsoft said was down to increased efficiencies. The service, which competes with Google Apps, only came out of beta eight months ago.

"As we rapidly add customers, the cost to run Office... Read more

Apple hands iWork.com its P45

Apple will kill its iWork.com document-sharing service at the end of July, the company said on Friday.

In a support note, Apple said 31 July would be the last day anyone can publish new documents to the service from their Mac or iOS iWork productivity tools — although there would be little point in doing so before then either, as documents already shared on iWork.com will cease to be available.

Canonical tailors Ubuntu for enterprises

Canonical has released Ubuntu Business Desktop Remix, a version that is specifically tailored to the needs of corporate and government users.

The remix, announced on Friday, provides a version of Ubuntu 11.10 with thin client apps and other business-friendly tools preinstalled, and without consumer-focused apps.

"The Ubuntu Business Desktop Remix contains all the software needed to integrate into your IT... Read more
