Viktor Pleshchuk has received a six-year suspended sentence for his role in the RBS WorldPay hack that netted the infiltrators $9.4m (£5.8) in cash machine withdrawals, according to online reports.
Pleshchuk, 28, was tried by a Russian court and issued with a six-year suspended sentence, to include four-years on probation. He was also ordered to repay 275 million Rubles (£5.7m) to WorldPay, according to Bloomberg.
According to the report, Pleshchuk plead guilty to the charges and is "fully collaborating with authorities", which includes providing information about his fellow hackers charged with the breach.
Seven other individuals were charged in relation to the crime, with the US authorities extraditing Sergei Tsurikov of Tallinn, Estonia to face charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit computer fraud, computer fraud and aggravated identity theft.
The prosecution alleges that Tsurikov and others hacked into RBS WorldPay's computer network and cracked the data encryption on payroll debit cards — used to pay employees, who then withdraw the money from cash machines.
According to the charges, the gang then extracted more than $9m using 44 fake debit cards from over 2,100 cash machines in at least 280 cities dotted around the globe — in a span of less than 12 hours.
