Greetings, I run a small IT shop. I manage both the servers and the SW development. I could tell you some neat solutions to a lot of problems, some very common, but I am posting for another reason. We are all screwed! No doubt about it and no avoiding it either. It is about the most basic thing in life and it's going to get a lot tougher. It is energy. We all know the future. If we don't run out of fossil energy, we're going to kill the world with green house gases. Well, you and I are in a position to do some small thing about it. We, as technologists that constantly use machines, can each in our own way, have the opportunity to cut back on this problem. It's the idea of 'Think Globally, Act Locally'. Think of every hour you run a server, monitor or other device as another pound of carbon dioxide released, a little more sulfer to make acid rain and a little more mercury to poison our children. No, there's not a lot we can do, we need our leadership to lead organized responces to develop energy systems that won't kill us. Still, we can all look at the systems around us and there are ways we can save power. There are things we can shut down. A monitor can be clicked off. A machine can be shut down that is running for no purpose. It's not much, but it is what we can do and no one else can (and Heaven help anyone who does it without my go ahead!). We represent a major energy consumption. We are responsible for our systems. It is our responsibility to husband that energy. Lets just hope it isn't too late already. Enjoy and good luck, Mike PS. Use HTML to document your systems and you can save yourself huge problems. The heirarchal structure works really well.

I already save as much as I can, not only energy, but water, don't waste food, nor speech. I have plans to energize electronics with solar (photovoltaic) generators in my next venture, in a tropical country. Once there, I will concentrate in various projects of products using the sun's heat, other radiation, and mass producing photovoltaics to lower their unit cost. That should contribute to decrease consumption of fossil fuels. I hope.
