When Work Becomes Life

Monday 30 October 2006, 10:30 PM

Although I could never disagree that constant technological improvement is a positive, I'm beginning to become more and more concerned with the consumer/worker divide. Though I would never refuse new technology, I do feel that to some extent, we're losing our ability to be off-call. Switching off isn't as easy, and in a business capacity, downtime is what needs to be minimised the most. Surely, there are social repercussions and what about the companies? Is non-work related usage on your mobile, blackberry, laptop, seen as white-collar crime or is this becoming more and more acceptable, as this division becomes less and less defined?

I'm not sure I want one. I mean I see people using them on the underground. But it means you never get an opportunity to just switch off - I mean mentally rather than literally. I can understand that to deal with the junk on the way home, saves having a really hectic day the next day, but surely everyone is entitled to some ME time....especially when on top of working late, you then get on the train to finish up in time for the 10'o'clock news...Is business THAT important?

people ahve them for a reason..your overpaid and told you need to be able to be contacted. its faster then logging on a computer. if you dont like it...throw it away. turn it off. leave it at work or sell it to a grebo on the way home and buy a round for ya mates.

Life is hard, and many of us have been abused in our childhoods and right up into our adult lives
