Web-site business security

Friday 13 July 2007, 7:34 PM

Picking up on the web apps security issue, it made me wonder about the effectiveness of site security. I would be interested in hearing people's comments on how effectively a web-site business can be secured against hacking, regarding for example clients' transactions. I'll be starting a web page business in September related to psychological services and content there needs to remain confidential as well. I've noticed some web businesses display a "hacker safe" flag apparently updated daily, but I question how safe is "safe" ? Does anyone have an opinion on this?

Safe is safe as far as yr knowlegde goes. Someone will always be able to hack on your website, ist a matter of interest, time and knowledge level. Talking about level you want to go as high as you can. You must check your code, there are good tools for that. You want to avoid SQL injection, you might want to change the banner of yr server as well. All these things can be done with tools, google yr request on safe coding, etc. Then if you really want it to be taken to high protection, you might have it checked by security experts.

Hope this helps,
Laurence

Dear Laurence, I've just seen your reply while reviewing my emails, so I'm very sorry I missed it first time. Most grateful thanks. Our site is not live yet, and we are still working on it but it should be up and running soon. Thanks for your tip about not using SQL I notice that recently anti-copying programs that can be inserted into CD roms have come in for critisism recently because some of these have an element that invades a user's computer to feed back user information and that in itself is unethical. I'll follow your advice about googling "safe coding" that's a good idea, thanks for that.

Again, sincere apologies for missing your reply at the time

Lindsay
