Merging technologies

Monday 15 October 2007, 4:40 PM

Do you think Apple, Microsoft and Linux should combine all their efforts and technologies?

Yes! I also think there should be world peace, an end to famine and free smoothies for all.

Actually, no - combining all three (Apple, MS and Linux, not the peace and stuff) would destroy competition and result in lock-in and a lack of innovation. However, it would be nice if a bit more code was opened up to, well, cut down on lock-in etc...

Yes I agree, but competition can loose customers. ; )

I think though so far, Apple is the only company making huge efforts in doing so with sharing their source codes: http://www.macosforge.org/

I'm sorry are you saying Apple is more opensource than Linux?

I dont beleive it would be a good idea to combine linux which you can download for free and then use free open source applications on and a Mac platform which allows you to back up a whole application (not that anybody uses this for the wrong reasons) with windows and Bill Gates who charged his own Grandmother for her copy of Vista.
By having the three it means we get the greatest and latest from all possible sources. Without LInux we woud never have even taken bluetooth networking seriously and without mac OS 10.4 Microsoft wouldnt of been able to mimic many of its aspects for windows vista (lol) whilst adding its own spices.

So to conclude i think we'll stay as we are.
