Nokia will release its 9000 Communicator on Thursday, paving the way for a host of so-called smart phones that add PC-type capabilities to mobile phones.

The 9000 has been the subject of much discussion ever since its appearance at the CeBIT trade show In March of this year. Based on Geoworks' GEOS operating system, the unit packs PIM, e-mail, fax, SMS, and Internet access features into a GSM phone with integral LCD screen and embedded Intel processor.

Pricing is expected to be around £950 with availability through a wide range of PC, cellular phone and electronics resellers.
