Sharp to release wide-screen notebook

22 Oct 1996 10:18

Sharp will move the goalposts in LCD technology next week when it launches the first notebook PC to use a cinema screen-shaped display.

The TFT display is the Japanese giant's own and offers resolutions up to 1,024 x 600 in a wider than usual 11.2-inch diagonal format. It will receive its debut next Wednesday, October 30 with the large of the aptly named WideNote notebook. Sharp declined to give pricing or other specification details for the product.

The WideNote weighs only 4.6 pounds and has the A4 format of orthodox notebooks. Sharp claims the wider screen and high resolution makes it suitable for viewing video, spreadsheets and other applications that require large amounts of screen real estate, although the 1,024 x 768 12.1-inch panels on some top-end notebooks should, in theory, offer a larger working area.

Sharp can be contacted by telephone 0161-205 2333.
