Stick-shaped memory touted for small devices

A small-format, stick-shaped memory type is the latest design being touted for use in digital cameras, PDAs and other pocket-sized devices.

Backed by Casio, Fujitsu, Olympus, Sanyo and Sharp the 32Mb capacity "memory stick" format is intended as a de facto standard for such devices. Its shape is intended to make it easier for manufacturers to build slimline designs with high memory capacities. Products with memory stick are expected to ship in 1998.

The memory stick format is only the latest in a number of small-format designs but uptake of competing technologies such as CompactFlash and Miniature Card has been patchy. Another rival product, Iomega's postage stamp-sized n.hand, is slated for shipping next year.
