Compaq is putting a firework up the PC market by offering a free monitor with Deskpro 2000, 4000 and 6000 PCs sold from August.

Systems based on Pentium Pro or Pentium II processors come with Compaq's V70 17-inch monitor, saving the usual £510 purchase price. Pentium and Pentium MMX models ship with a V50 or P50 15-inch screen, saving £305. Buyers alternatively have the option of a £100 discount on any other monitor.

Compaq has also begun selling its Multimedia Sound System base module as a £55 option.
