Linux -- the free operating system with an avid grassroots following -- may just be about to go mainstream.

Red Hat Software, a leading distributor of Linux, announced Tuesday that it had won significant financial backing from Netscape, Intel and two venture capital firms -- a move that suddenly made the 7-year-old OS an overnight sensation.
