SDMI meet for first time

The first meeting of the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI) is taking place in Los Angeles today.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is due to meet with more than 200 representative to discuss the framework, organisation and structure of SDMI.

Organised by the RIAA, the initiative comes as a response to the ever increasing popularity of downloading music over the Internet using the MP3 format.

Dr Leonardo Chiarglione, a pioneer of MPEG technology is expected to become Executive Director of the SDMI.

Cary Sherman, executive vice president of the RIAA said of today's meeting: "It is an important milestone towards establishing a legitimate marketplace for digital music."
