US investment bank Goldman Sachs Tuesday moved to calm fears about its involvement in Mannesmann's proposed £19bn takeover of wireless operator Orange. Goldman is an adviser to Orange, but is also has a long-standing relationship with Vodafone AirTouch, the world's largest mobile phone operator.
Vodafone AirTouch is rumoured to be considering moves to derail the Orange-Mannesmann deal. But Tuesday Goldman told Orange it would not act in any way to threaten the Mannesmann merger.
