Struggling Web portal AltaVista will announce the lay off of an undisclosed number of employees Friday, in attempt to revive its pioneer search engine.
The layoffs will mark the second round of staff cuts for the company in five months; an indication of the saturated market that hundreds of Web portals are having to contend with.
AltaVista currently employs 900 workers.
Company executives hope that the slashing of its workforce will move its North American operations into profitability by January 2001.
