In anticipation of the coming implementation of the Freedom of Information Act, the Office of the Information Commissioner has a new chief operating officer

The Information Commissioner's Office has appointed a chief operating officer.

The appointment of Simon Entwisle was announced on 28 October 2004. He has joined as the ICO is expanding in anticipation of the full implementation of the Freedom of Information Act on 1 January, 2005.

Entwisle has spent the past year as change and development manager at the Office of the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman, and has been in operational management for 12 years. He will report directly to the information commissioner, Richard Thomas, and sit on the ICO's management board.

Richard Thomas said: "This appointment further strengthens my office's commitment to provide proficient data protection advice and enforce the Data Protection Act where necessary. Simon will work closely with all senior managers to coordinate activity ensuring that the organisation operates effectively."
