Indian firm brings tech jobs to Belfast

Tech Mahindra plans a new service delivery centre in Northern Ireland's capital, creating over 200 jobs

Indian IT and telecoms company Tech Mahindra is to create around 220 jobs in Belfast with a new multimillion-pound service delivery centre.

Pune-based Tech Mahindra — formerly known as Mahindra BT — is a joint venture between BT and India's Mahindra & Mahindra. BT's group chief information officer Al-Noor Ramji is a non-executive director on the company's board.

The new Belfast centre will provide support for Tech Mahindra's European and US telecoms customers. The company said it will generate £21m in wages and salaries over the first three years through the creation of approximately 220 "high-quality" jobs.

No figure has been released on the total investment by Tech Mahindra in the Belfast centre but Invest Northern Ireland is putting £2.2m towards the total project costs. The centre has already opened with 60 staff and recruitment for a variety of IT and telecoms development roles is ongoing.

The move brings the number of people employed by Indian tech companies in Northern Ireland to more than 2,500. Other Indian companies to open operations in Northern Ireland include FirstSource, HCL and Polaris.

Sanjay Kalra, president of strategic initiatives at Tech Mahindra, said in a statement: "Our growth requires high-class talent with the right attitude and a good work ethic. Belfast has this refreshing attitude and the spirit of innovation in abundance. Our Belfast centre will play a pivotal role in servicing and growing our client base in Europe and North America."

Invest North Ireland chief executive, Leslie Morrison, said the Tech Mahindra centre is an endorsement of Northern Ireland as a "world-class location" for telecommunications companies.

Tech Mahindra also has operations in Australia, Egypt, Germany, India, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, UAE, the UK and the US.
