NEWS
Novell has added a desktop search tool to the next version of its Linux desktop software, which is due for release on Wednesday.

SuSE Linux Professional 9.3 will include Beagle, an open source desktop search tool that makes it easier for users to find various types of files, including documents, emails, IM conversations and code. Novell claims to be the first Linux provider to have packaged Beagle into its desktop application.

"For the first time anywhere SUSE Linux Pro includes Beagle, the innovative open source desktop search tool that can access everything on your desktop," Novell said in a statement.

The application also includes automatic recognition and support for Apple iPod and the current version of the GNOME desktop.

Novell's current Linux desktop, SuSE Linux Professional 9.2, was released in October last year and included support for 64-bit processors and Bluetooth.

Talkback

A small correction to the headline.:
I think you meant SuSE Linux 9.3 Professional, not 9.2. The current version is 9.2.

Slight correction, Foresight Desktop Linux already comes with Beagle packaged. Novell developed it (great job), but will not be the first to include it in a desktop distro.

This will be an added bonus and a real one up on RH.
The 9.2 (pro) which I have been rolling out at work is a great desktop coupled with Star Office 8. User retraining was minimal. We will slowly move additional users over. Now I can deploy 9.3 to the marketing group since they would die without their iPods.

As soon as an ERP/MRP with integrated Accounting and Automation Controll system can be implemented on Linux (SuSe/Novell) it's goodby 90% MS. The good just keeps getting better.

SuSE 9.3 hasn't even been announced yet. I'm sure it won't be released for a while.

Here we go again... Novel Announcing that they are the first to do something that up until now everyone but them was doing. Check it out people. Beagle has been packaged for all of the majors and most of the minor distro's for a long time. *sigh*

I wonder why nobody talks about x-friend.
Although this is not open source (freeware), and still beta, but there is some hope. Maybe it would be better to press over company that makes x-friend to open it. I'm not convinced in c# (beagle is written in c#). I just prefer java since it is some kind of standard.
