Outcry forces reprieve for Outlook Express

NEWS
Just days after announcing that it planned to halt development on the Outlook Express email client, Microsoft has been forced to change its position following internal confusion and an outcry from customers.

As ZDNet Australia reported earlier this week, Microsoft had planned to stop product development on Outlook Express, which forms part of the Internet Explorer code bundled with consumer versions of Windows. "The technology doesn't go away, but no new work is being done," Office product manager Dan Leach said.

Under that vision, consumers would have been directed towards the company's MSN software, while businesses would be encouraged to purchase Office, which includes the full Outlook client.

However, Leach has now stepped away from his original comments, claiming that while Microsoft had originally planned to halt new work on Outlook Express, the situation has since changed.

"I sat down with the Windows team today, and they tell me my comments were inaccurate," Leach said Friday. "Outlook Express was in sustain engineering, but customers asked for continued improvement, and we are doing that. Microsoft will continue its innovation around the email experience in Windows."

Leach blamed communication problems for the confusion. "The Outlook Express team has been in the process of making this change known inside Microsoft," he said. "They just hadn't reached me before I left for Asia."

The lack of internal communication underlines the growing challenge faced by Microsoft as it attempts to co-ordinate software development activities over an increasingly diverse range of markets.

Talkback

Just the same, but I now switched to Eudora. Hopefully there will be a nice opensource soon. I checked www.sourceforge.com but didn't find any. I believe the opensource version (yet not always perfect) are much faster in their implementations of user requirements. But for now no Outlook Express for me. Microsoft is just spoiling it. They should consern themselves with customer demands. Yet I have never seen SPAM filtering unless you install third party add-ons. I know of more missing features but I'll not bore you with it, since you probably know some too.

The internet community has created an extensive wishlist for the next Outlook Express. I sure hope Microsoft will take this in consideration. It's posted on their own forums!

IncrediMail or PocoMail use either one and you'll not need to talk about OE any longer.

I have Outlook, but I want something simple, fast, and easy for my email. I am not interested in HotMail or MSN - popups and all kinds of garbage loading. OE works fine as is -I don't need any "improvements," but if its not available at least in its present incarnation, then I will look elsewhere. There are non-microsoft email products available, which I will try if MS drops Outlook Express. What's wrong with MS? Nevermind, I know - the $ God before everything - but they may miscalculate.

Let's first all say it together "LONG LIVE OPENSOURCE"

Mozilla Mail (www.mozilla.com) has everything Outlook Express has, and it's being heavilly improved by the community.

Do you demand even more? Something like Outlook? Switch to Linux and use Evolution.

Remember: you loose nothing for trying!

And the security problems will continue...!

I say, let Outlook Express--and its equally buggy cousin, Outlook--die on the vine. There are many fine alternate IMAP email clients, such as KMail, Ximian Evolution, Mozilla Mail, etc. And you don't need to buy a MS Office license to use them, either. Not only that, these other IMAP clients, not being a part of Internet Exploder, are free from the security...ahem, "issues" that so many users experience.

For those who say, "Well, Microsoft is the standard", to you I say, these days, it doesn't have to be. They used to write decent code once upon a time. They no longer do. We have real alternatives that actually work very well, even if you feel the need to run them on Windows (I don't--I've chosen FreeBSD).

I love Incredimail, the only problem is that most virus scanners, Do Not support it. That begins to create a problem. Outlook Express is at least supported by virus makers. Forget the virus scanner for Incredimail. It is a joke.

We just installed Office 2003 and had planned on using Outlook instead of Outlook Express. Neither of us are all that impressed with Outlook. Outlook does have some very good features, but I find it more difficult to work with it. OE is very easy to work with, with the exception of it crashing so easy. What will we stay with? Not certain at this time, but the lady of the house wants to stay with OE~

Please! Do not do away with Outlook Ezpress! I've been using it for several years and think it's the best. Before that I was on AOL, but like this much better.
At present, after having work done on my system, I lost something on Outlook Express. I am unable to use the "sent" feature, and sometimes the "send" feature. It is really messed up. I must have my Outlook Exp. Please tell me what to do and who to turn to for help. I need these feature to run my book business. I am an author and sell my own books. When my computer messed up, things fell apart for awhile, but now this.
Help!

I have been trying Outlook 2003 for a week and Eudora 6.1 also. No matter how hard I want to like them, they just don't compare to MOE for raw speed in downloading 5,000 emails at a time. MOE is much cleaner. It never locks up or feels clunky like Outlook and Eudora do. They have more bells and whistles, but for someone who receives tons of email every day.

MOE is still the fastest gun in the west, and the best.

I'm just going back to it right now and I have a huge grin on my face.

Is it true what is being said about Incredimail?

I am looking for help with Outlook Express. This is my first visit.

I need to print out 3 different "groups" All I get are the names, no email addresses. I need both. Would you have an answer. If I could print the block of information that appears when you hover the mouse over the groups name, that would help. But, it goes away when the mouse is moved.
