Software maker SAP said on Monday that it has partnered with Sybase to use the company's database management software with its business applications.

The deal is seen as a blow for Microsoft, which has been the primary database supplier for SAP's Business One set of applications that are targeted at small to medium-sized companies.

With the Sybase deal, SAP will be able to offer Business One on Unix and Linux operating systems, in addition to Windows, beginning next year. The companies said they also plan to develop mobile software as a result of the deal.

An SAP representative said the deal is consistent with the company's product plans. In June, SAP signed a similar deal to bundle IBM's DB2 database with Business One applications beginning next year.

The move also underscores Microsoft's role as both a supplier of core infrastructure software to software vendors, and as a seller of business applications that compete with those vendors. Microsoft is also investing heavily in the market for business applications aimed at small to medium-size businesses.

Microsoft was not immediately available to comment on the SAP announcement.

SAP and Sybase plan to target companies in the financial services, health care, insurance and telecommunications markets.

Talkback

SAP did'nt bother Bill Gates with that brilliant
cut throat move with Sybase. Bill knows better
than anyone in the industry how the game is
played; Its every dollar for himself. SAP saw
Bill doing business with their competition and
shoulders got colder than expected. As a rule
of thumb nothing should be considered exclusive in cyberspace--not even your wife. Oh well, Bill got bigger fish to fry. Italy'sTIM,
Openwave and Frost&Sullivan are still on board hopefully. Bill needs though strategical
mobile carrier partnerships to gain foot hold
in his most relevant project--digital music. The( Media Mall Center) is a stroke of genius. If the Code warrior alliance is still intact, Media series 10 platform in conjunction with Napster,Samsung,Imatation,Target and Dixon could very well compel the software giant as a loss leader phenomenon for the next hundred years--he'll sell and make too much money once again; not to mention all the variety of devices that will support his musical devices deployed from different consumer electronic industry segments.
