Since being set up in 1997, the charity has refurbished and distributed around 70,000 PCs to schools and other public sector organisations, mainly in Africa and Asia. "Over the past year, we have become victims of our own success, and now find ourselves unable to keep pace with the demand for PCs for schools and community organisations in developing countries," said the organisation's chief executive, Tony Roberts.
The new campaign will also see Computer Aid expand its activities to include mobile phones and unwanted printer cartridges. Companies will be able to donate old and unwanted handsets and cartridges in recycling boxes provided by the charity. Computer Aid's recycling partner Reclaim IT will then collect the box and the printer cartridges will be cleaned and sold for reuse, while the mobile phones will be reconditioned and sent to the developing world. Reclaim IT will donate £25 to Computer Aid for every box it receives.
