Inspiron owners complain of SP2 slowdown

NEWS
Owners of Dell Inspiron notebooks have reported that Microsoft's Windows Service Pack 2 is cutting their system speeds dramatically -- in some cases by a factor of almost ten, from 2.6GHz to 300MHz.

According to postings on Dell's support forums this week, owners of the notebooks experienced the slowdown after installing the update for Windows XP Home Edition. One owner reported similar problems at work. "I tested SP2 for a week or two before it came out and before I deployed it on my network," wrote a correspondent identified as Blane. "I was prepared for [almost] anything except this issue," said Blane, who found that deleting and reinstalling printer drivers helped.

Blane added that scanners should be removed and reinstalled as well, noting: "it seems that SP2 moves or removes some of the required dll files for these peripherals. Reinstalling them replaces the missing dlls and everything seems to run fine."

Dell did not immediately respond to requests for comment for this article, but one correspondent, Ron Colverson, posted the response that Dell sent him: "Dell does not validate any externally loaded software and can therefore make no representations as to their effectiveness, stability, appropriateness, or safety," it said. "Any problems encountered with this kind of software should be addressed to the respective manufacturer."

This response appeared to spark incredulity among other forum users.

Covlerson later posted a fix apparently provided by US-based PC seller Campustech, which involves rolling back the processor driver. But many owners were left asking why Dell doesn't support Microsoft patches.

Talkback

I have had a couple of customers who downloaded SP2 as automatic downloads and after booting back uo computers would just keep booting up in a constant cycle. I personally advise not to download unless you have your hard drive backed up. These were Dell machines

THERE IS NO PROBLEM HERE. SP2 MAKES SOME ENHANCEMENTS TO THE INTEL SPEEDSTEP. THIS IS WORKING AS DESIGNED. THE INTEL SPEEDSTEP LOWERS THE SPEED OF THE PROCESSOR TO LOWER THE POWER STATE OF THE PORTABLE SYSTEM TO SAVE BATTERY POWER. YOU CAN EASILY CHANGE THIS BY SETTING THE POWER SCHEME TO ALWAYS ON. THERE IS NO "FIX" NECESSARY.

Inspiron XP Service Pack 2 Slowdown Fix

I accidentally stumbled into a fix for the Inspiron slowdown problem, but I'm not sure what the fix really was.

My own machine was slowing down drastically, so I uninstalled and then reinstalled several items, including:
-Client for MS Networks
-QoS Packet Scheduler
-File and Printer Sharing

Plus I Disabled, then re-enabled several Servces, according to a list I found in The Register, which ren an article about security holes in the XP's SP2. After my system was crapped up by the suggestions in Reg's article, I put all those things back in place, and suddenly, my Inspiron was running just fine again.

Somewhere in there, SP2 must have screwed up something, but my mucking around fixed it. No idea which setting did the trick. Maybe y'all can isolate a particular one.

This probably doesn't help a bit, but I didn't change my CPU driver.

Dell proudly recommend Windows XP to customers on their website. How come they can't provide a fix to a problem that plagues Microsoft flagship OS ? Talk about hypocrisy !

While, it is terribly unfortunate that there are bugs, it is a calculated risk. Anyone who expects change with zero turbulance is nieve, and irrational.
Dell's response by it's techy's is obviously company policy driven. Anyone that's worked with policies within a company know they are dumb, but they are there to keep things standardised.

Dell flaunts Windows XP but has obviously not taken the steps to test and ensure SP2's compatability on all of it's platforms. As such they haven't once publicly announced or told the consumers to update.
A resolution from Dell will come in time for those troubled users. In the mean time we will see many heated flames of irrationality from both amateurs and professionals who should know better then to panic at the first sign of incompatability.

Clue in, folks. Windows is, and will always be, a second-rate pile of spaghetti code.

Not true. The 'Dell support alert' delivered directly to my dell laptop are telling me to go and get the SP2 update.

Have similar system speed loss w/ SP2 been reported by Inspiron owners running XP Professional Edition or only by those running XP Home Edition?

Like tying a bowling ball to a turtle...
My Inspiron 1100 basically became worthless with SP2. Web pages went from 5 seconds to load to 5 minutes plus. Rolled back with system restore and it's back to normal.

I thought my new computer was awfully slow! Thus far I am not impressed with Dell and if they are not supporting MS patches that would be consistent with the level of service I've seen from them thus far. I don't know why some people rave about Dell service.

I don't have an Inspiron. I built my machine myself. When I first installed SP2 everything appeared to be ok. That is until I trired to do some DVD authoriing. Then I noticed it now took twice as long to create a DVD. Since photography and shooting videos are my hobbies I pulled SP2 off and things are back to normal. With the exception of outllok express. It's slowed way down. Looks like whateve SP2 did to that there is no backing it out. There is no way I am going to install SP2 again. I think Microsoft is in cahoots with the hardware companies to force everyone go to 4 gigihz machines. If I can find versions of the software that I use under linux I am switching. I have had enough of Microsoft.

Slowdown Fixed!! My Inspiron 1150 also slowed down to a crawl after installing the SP 2 patch. The solution I used was sent in to ZDNet by Inspiron tech Matt Loney. (Check it out) Just a few mouse clicks and your free of grief. THANK YOU MATT
