...ships with a minimal CRM, a new project called Pacemaker was spun off, which serves as the CRM for the Heartbeat foundation. If you are looking for an open-source clustering solution, this one might be the ticket.

7. Enomaly
Enomaly offers cloud computing for any size of environment. However, if you want to get to the source, you have to use the Community edition. This version is for smaller enterprise use.

With this browser-based management tool, you can design, deploy and manage virtual applications within a cloud environment. You can plan and simplify deployments and automate virtual machine scaling and load-balancing. If you are a developer, you will appreciate the way Enomaly includes links to both its core APIs.

8. Nuxeo
Nuxeo is an outstanding document management system that is incredibly rich in features and simple to install. Nuxeo has so many features, the best way for you to see them all is to go to the Nuxeo Feature List page.

With the Nuxeo document management system, users can work either online or offline.

Working offline requires uploading content. Users can simply drag and drop content from desktop to browser for content capture. It doesn't get much easier.

Nuxeo is also offered in a cloud-computing edition, which eliminates the need for storage, hardware infrastructure, or server availability.

The cloud edition of Nuxeo was built with the Amazon AWS.

9. Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus is another open-source cloud-computing utility. There are two versions: Open Source and Enterprise. Naturally, we are looking at the Open Source edition.

With Eucalyptus, not only can you serve cloud apps, you can also control the network and the storage infrastructure. Eucalyptus works with Ubuntu, OpenSuse, Debian and CentOS, and supports both Xen and KVM hypervisors.

10. Google Web Toolkit
Developers may want to consider adding Google Web Toolkit (GWT) to their arsenal. You can use it to write a front-end for an app in Java and then have GWT compile the source into a highly optimised JavaScript. And since GWT is open source, you can join the Google Webkit Community and contribute modifications to the project.

Your turn
Have you come across an open-source application that is a must-have? If so, share it with us.

Talkback

I have never thought of social marketing outside the usual suspects of Facebook, Twitter, Ning, LinkedIn etc.

Therefore, the idea of open source enterprise social marketing software where you are not absorbed (or adsorbed) into existant brand identities seems wonderful.

However, my first instinctive response is that I consider social networking (sorry, I meant this when I typed "social marketing earlier") to be of most beneficial use when it is linked to search engine optimisation. My concern therefore is that all the time spent in using open source applications is not time well spent unless you can make the SEO work.

Excellent discussion though - many thanks. I think, for what it's worth, that we are yet to see the fruits of open source software yet. OpenOffice was a start, and is excellent. But it is by no means the end.

I think these are all great alternatives, but by far the best inventory management software is Visual Retail Plus. It's even worth paying for!
