The £499+VAT unit is likely to sell on the street at about £500 inc. VAT, putting it well below low-cost brand names such as Iiyama, and only a little higher than the Taiwanese no-names. Although the Bradford, West Yorkshire-based firm is strong in vertical markets such as financial dealing it has lost the broad, popular appeal it once had when supplying screens to the likes of Amiga, Acorn and BBC computers. The GPM 1701 can display 1024x768 images at 76Hz and comes with on-screen display controls and supports frequencies ranging from 64KHz down to 15KHz in order to show television broadcasts. Microvitec sees sales of the product going to PC vendors as well as through distribution channels. "This is our first major push into volume for some time," said Roger Moore, marketing communications manager. "We're trying to lose the vertical market reputation and move into fresh markets." Separately, in October the firm will ship a 13.3-inch TFT external display that it claims can be viewed at an angle of 140 degrees and equals the viewing area of a 17-inch CRT monitor. The product will answer a frequent criticism of LCD monitors that they are difficult to view for groups of users, for example in presentations. With a projected list price of £2,500+VAT, the product will supplement today's Proteus 26V 10.4in TFT external display.
