Tesco puts broadband in trolley

NEWS
Tesco is to become a provider of broadband Internet access, playing on a down-to-earth approach, customer loyalty and its ability to cross-sell other branded services.

The retailer is billing Tesco Broadband as both the "cheapest full 512K (sic) speed, unlimited service on offer in the UK from any major service provider" and "designed by children so adults can understand it".

It was developed using a panel of parents and their children who attend Ripple Infant and Junior School in Barking, Essex.

The company's communications partner in Tesco Broadband is NTL.

A spokeswoman said: "In a family, people use broadband in different ways. It's the kids who typically deal with bigger files, with things like games and video, but with a capped service parents are worrying all the time."

The service costs £19.97 per month, compared to around £25 for similar offerings from the likes of AOL, BT and Tiscali -- though Tesco is aware this is a market changing fast and is being careful about claiming to be the cheapest anywhere.

Connection and an ADSL modem are free, as is support, though only for the first 30 days. Thereafter it is 50p per minute. A firewall as well as antivirus and anti-spam protection is bundled with the service.

The retailer, which has operations in countries such as South Korea where extensive broadband coverage has made online shopping easier, is clearly hoping for some cross over with its other services.

Users will earn Clubcard points (one point per pound spent) and it is hoped customers will be those who use Tesco for voice calls, mobile calls and ecommerce through Tesco.com - naturally made easier with a broadband connection.

Tesco Broadband is available now, either from the Tesco website or from 700 stores nationwide, on CD-ROM.

Talkback

I use e7even for broadband and entering my second year as a deal to pay up front the service is £12.50/month full 512K no limits. Tesco has got some way to go on this one.

Sounds good however greater speed 1 gb(20 X) at a cheaper price of £17.99 per month from Wanadoo (albeit with a 2gb download limit) compared to £19.97 from Tesco with a 512k connection speed (10 x).

I assume Tesco will reappraise it's pricing in order to compete?

And that is where it will stay.......in the trolley. I am apparently able to receive BB but not from Tesco, my ISP. I'm too far from the exchange, [2 miles]. I can, however get BB from Wanadoo.

I Like the thought of using braodband but i'm only home for six months of the year, would they every consider billing for on line use of braodband instead of a monthly bill. for me that would be a waste of money.

I have had tesco dial up service for 1 year now at £12.49 per month for unlimited access and have never had any problems with it at all.I will be changing over to tesco broadband shortly for there good package and unlimited downloads, realibility is well worth £19.97 per month.

Hi,
I am confused I got the installation CD and on the sleeve it tells me that the so called bundled in services, if I wnat them, will cost an extra 50p permonth on top of the £19.97 for the Broadband in fact it would cost an additional £1.50. On one hand you tell me it IS included and now you it is NOT??
Well, is it or is it NOT.

PS- I reqyested on line to have the CD mailed to me and still have NOT received it. My wife picked it up locally from Tesco

We think tesco internet customer service is very poor and have just cancelled our internet account with Tesco. We has been with Tesco internet access for over four years. It was very excited when we first heard that tesco was going to provide broadband service and we orderd it immediately. Four weeks later we have not had any reply from Tesco braodband service and have been calling customer help line 0845 650 8000 and broadband help desk 0800 479 8181and there are always nobody answer the phone.

We understand that Tesco broadband package is cheaper than BT and other broadband service. However Tesco customer service is very poor and we are willing to pay more money to other broadband provider with good customer services.

We are very frustrated and disappointed with Tesco broadband customer service.

It seemed too good to be true. Tesco introducing BB. As an existing Tesco Net user promptly signed up for BB but here I still sit chugging through these comments only to find my experience is reflected by others.

Am just off on holiday and will wait to see what I find upon return. I did actually speak with a human voice on 0800 479 8181 but he blamed delays on BT.!!! If not resolved on return will dump Tesco totally.

As a mac user I have been trying to register with tesco - who say they support mac OSX - but after numerous calls - some leading nowhere - I still haven't managed it - I did speak to a very helpful guy just now and thought I'd cracked it - armed with new instructions for my network preferences - I typed these in excitedly - and nope still no connection ! However I will persevere as it is so affordable - I'll tell you how I get on -

Contrary to another opinion on this site, I have found Tesco Broadband excellent. They kept me informed about the progress of the switch-over through regular emails. The day my broadband was activated my free modem turned up. Now that's timing! Everything has been set up smoothly and without any hassle.

The service so far has been excellent. I would recommend them to others looking for cheap, full-speed broadband with no bandwidth restrictions. Plus you get clubcard points!

My advice is to avoid Tesco Broadband like the plague!

I have consistent difficulties connecting to Tesco Broadband, cannot get a reply from the so called Helpline, they don't respond to e-mails and appear to have removed their Broadband help webpage today. If the system worked properly I'd like their advice on getting another e-mail address (they claim 14 addresses) but as they're impossible to communicate with, I'm not holding my breath.

I think Watchdog might be getting a few calls about this one. Bad one Tesco!

We have BTYahoo BB, and I couldn't be more pleased. It's a bit more expensive, and it handholds you a little bit (but nowhere near as much as AOL). However, it went in like a dream, has no outages that I'm aware of since February. Also included is a good suite of software and services. Recommended!

Well, I've been reading all of the above and I have to admit I'm pretty shocked by it all.

It would seem that, in general, Tesco are not as good as they are making out - which is a shame, because I was concidering going onto Broadband with them.

I also notice that you yourself,Tony, or Tesco, make no attempt to repudiate the charges - is this an acknowledgement of them?

Are the problems going to be sorted or not?

Can I risk Tesco or not?

Can you let me know soon because I'm on a deadline with my son; he's up-dating my computer to broadband within the next few weeks.

Cheers! And Happy New Year 2005.

I have been trying continiously since december 2003 to call them to cancel my agreement and I still havn,t managed to speak to them and I am therefore still paying for a service I don't get. Tesco Broadband. Nice price. £20 per month. The downside is it has very poor reliability. After surfing the net for a while, the internet connection goes down for a moment and I'm unable to connect to the internet until the Speed touch ADSL square on my system tray turns from yellow (Initiating ADSL) to green. Considering Tesco Broadband having poor reliability, this is not good for those who play computer games online day in day out.

Why is broadband so expensive at the moment? broadband has been stuck at a stand still price of £15.99 for aslong i can remeber and now tesco has launched it broadband at £20.00, for most of the people who i have asked who were going for broadband would only use once or twice a month which is rediculas as some people who cant afford broadband would benefit like gamers. So sort it out ISP's £10 a month at least.

(3 years ago you would have had to pay nearly £20 for dial up imagine what broadband would be in 3 years time!)

Been on Tesco broadband now for 3 months and I have to say the service really is awful. Every day I ge a synchronisation error that I can't raise a fault with BT for, I have to spend 50p a minute talking to a total numpty on a technical help desk who insists on taking you through all of the DSL settings which takes 10 minutes until you find some obscure entry (which has no impact on DSL synchronisation) which he insists needs to be changed before a call can be logged with BT.... If you want Broadband BUY IT FROM BT!!!

E7Even SUCKS. Their service has been down since 30 December 2005. They finally offered a refund and a MAC number. Neither have been forthcoming. They don't answer their e-mails and they don't answer their telephones. Their customer service is non-existent, as is their broadband. Have they gone to the wall?

Avoid them like the plague!

I've had the same issue throughout Jamuary with E7even. Go to the Ofom website and complain. Operators like E7even need to be put out action before others are sucked to part with their money. (astonishingly their web-site is still advertising their Broadband service) http://www.ofcom.org.uk/complain/internet/e7even/

e7even...what can I say:-

August of last year I upgraded from 1Mb to 2 Mb. From that day onI've had dial-up speeds and or no connection at all. Paid extra for Tech. Support that never answered, TWO years in advance for the Bband service and obviously the upgrade fee. NOTHING NADA ZILCH!!

Naturally, I contacted OFCOM who to be fair weren't an awful lot of help Im afraid. Yet it does appear that their powers are limited :-(((

So, here's the rub. I live in the same town as the e7even customer support center. I took a trip to their office and found a sign on the door saying [sic.] If you do not have an appointment you will not be seen. [sic.] You can't get an appointment because you can't talk to anyone. Ultimately, after a few minutes of knuckle rapping, Mike Todd the Customer Services Manager agreed to see me. He informed me that my statements referring to other e7even customers were "irrelevant". I'm a customer, my thoughts on the service my acquaintences and I are receiving are very relevant and should be even more so to the Cust. Services Manager!! I requested a refund on my upgrade price and a full refund from August up to the end of the 2 year term. He promised to call me with a MAC code and a refund amount. He phoned a few days leaving a message informing me that I had been disconnected from their service and no MAC code was required an a cheque for £55.00 would be in the post. I notice on their site that they have my incorrect address and as I am no longer a member I can't amend those details. So I will never receive the absurdly low figure cheque in the post.

I applied for AOL Bband / Pipex BBand and many others and received the same answer. A MAC Code is required on your line as your previous ISP has still got markers OR flags on your line.

Many, many weeks later OFCOM contacted Mike Todd and he then leaves another message on my answerphone where he states he is trying to clear an entirely different number to ours mine which is indeed the one he dialled to leave a message...!! He then read out a MAC code with 17 characters in it. When he repeated it he read out a 16 character long code. He went on to say QUOTE "Last number, letter zero for OSCAR." What the hell does that mean??? Clearly I have been on the phone to BT about this, however they do not deal with the data side of your BT line. That is dealt with by BT Whole Sale. . Now known as BT open reach (could be out reach) however, they DO NOT speak to end users only to ISP's and are the only company who could remove said markers / flags without the consent of the ISP they are renting that side of your line to.

So, where are you left?

Get a dedicated new BT line...Uh Huh..Won't work.

Change number...? Doh!! Dont work.

Erm, change to Cable....? Not in this area and wont be for years if ever.

Satellite-up link...Too expensive.

What does that leave....? Move House.

I'd like to say though I would feel sorry for the person who bought my house. Why? Because they will have the same problems I'm having and potentially worse, as under data protection acts etc. the details of the ISP "hijacking" the line can't be revealed by or to BT or other ISP's so they wouldn't know who to phone and not get a response from.

This company sucks BIG TIME and I agree with a previous post that they should be banned from trading and it's incredible they are advertising for new customers. Shame on them.....

E7even. . . . . . . . I knew I was taking a risk, but ,being an optimist I though it would all be fine - two years at £10 a month, all paid for in advance. And for six months is was fine. Until this December. Now - what a mess. One despairs with the feeling of helplessness. At least they actually have a customer support centre - it's not someone's garage then? I think it is OUTRAGEOUS that they are still offering broadband to new customers. How about we all go and demonstrate outside their 'customer support centre'

Thank you very much for your posting; it really helps to know that someone else is going through the same hassle. I'm thinking of going to eclipse - does anyone know anything about them? Good luck, Sasha

Have just signed up to Tesco Value Broadband. BT tell us that 512k is our maximum connection speed so we wanted a low cost service. The process was efficiently managed with all targets met and good communications from them about the status of our order at all stages.

We went live on Monday 20 February 2006 as scheduled and set and usage everything we expected. Download speeds are in excess of expectations, perhaps we are lucky that local contention is low. Only problem is not Tesco's in that we have a 1GB monthly limit, approx 33MG/day. Office 2003 service pack was 90.9MB or 3 days usage in one hit!

e7even are in trouble.

they have used a failed business model.
without a continuous stream of new subscribers they have an insufficient income stream. as the market matures to saturation point that stream slows.
subscribers, like me will have received a circular email offering a contract amnesty and mac code for those with morethan three months left on their contract.
the truth is they cannot afford to do this. i recommend subscribers contact their credit card company and tell them no service provided/pursue e7 for refund.
ofcom mn do not deal with individual problems-only seem to collate statistics and refer people to otelo-another government qwango-job creation scheme-who are so far up themselves you will get messages like if we decide to investigate - this alone can take 4-8 weeks.a complete waste of taxpayers money.
best to get another line and start again-or emigrate

the broadband business is a free-for-all,completely unregulated

Are you sure????? I would not touch Tesco for any of their products. I had Tesco Broadband a year ago. I had nothing but trouble from day one. Apart from slow dowloads (I thought it was suppoosed to be one of the fastest) and dodgy connections, believe or not it kept disconnecting. I had an enginner in who checked my comp, nothing wrong there. Called Tesco helpline, got a Tesco standard response.............' I dunno what it is then'

I am now with BT Broadband and it is fantastic I would not swop even if Tesco begged on bended knee and paid me!!!!!

Sorry to hear Tesco broadband has problems for quite a few people. Very surprised the customer service is so poor. I have their car insurance and that customer service is. brilliant

Considering how much money Tesco makes from all its customers I would have thought they could have had a more reasonable cost for braodband - plenty around at £14.99 now - Tesco should be able to beat that without breaking the bank - so come on Tesco get moving on a cheaper and apparently more efficient braodband service.
