Opera Mini 5 will, as with previous versions of the lightweight browser, work on most Java-capable handsets.
However, the beta is the first version of the browser to be made available in a native BlackBerry flavour, which tailors functions such as the opening of links and cutting-and-pasting to RIM's platform.
According to Opera, an Android version of the new browser has not yet been developed, but the Mini team is "working on it".
