I completely disagree. I know one company where an open policy has proved to be a disaster. Some staff now spend almost all the company's time (and resources of course) on facebook etc. Their work is error-prone and slow.
This country's employment laws make it almost impossible to sack them. The company can't backtrack on availabilty of resources without a major backlash, and can't be seen to be 'victimising' these individuals by directly restricting their activities.
There are a few grumbles now from the shop floor that the office staff are getting extra perks. As this is a continuous process plant can you imagine what would happen if the machine operators were to start texting their friends and family when the're supposed to be monitoring the system?
