Apple warned over 'misleading' Power Mac speed claim

Apple has been told by the Advertising Standards Agency that its boast that the Power Mac G5 is the world's fastest personal computer is in breach of advertising legislation.

The ASA, after taking expert advice and running a series of tests comparing the Mac with the Dell Dimension 8300 and the Dell Precision 650, said the claim made in magazine adverts was misleading because the G5 wasn't "the fastest processor in all circumstances for all applications".

The ASA added that it "also understood that the G5 machine tested was still under development and the tests seemed to be configured in a way that might have given the Power Mac G5 an unfair advantage".

The ASA has asked Apple not to repeat the claim.

Two other complaints made about the ads -- namely that the PC is "the first with a 64-bit processor" and that the systems built around the G5 "can shatter the four-gigabyte memory ceiling that limits every other PC on earth" -- were not upheld.

The complaint about the 64-bit processor was rejected on the grounds that while computers had the processor they were "workstations" and not desktop PCs for home computing. The complaint over the 4GB 'ceiling' was rejected as the ASA found the G5 was the only PC that could access more than 4GB without the need for extra hardware.

Talkback

Gotta love it when what SHOULD have been a big smackdown for Apple, turned out to give them two significan't wins.

After their day in court, they can walk away with two validated claims -- being the first 64 Bit home/desktop computer, and being the only manufacturer shipping a stock 8GB-accessing PC with all that implies.

I believe it's a the <a href="http://www.asa.org.uk/index.asp">Advertising Standards Authority</a> rather than the Advertising Standards Agency.

I think that that Apples G5 clime on the 64 bit processor and that 4gigabites of ram are wrong. first, I see no difference between a workstation and a personal computer when they are priced are the same. Two Asus and others, make P4 motherboards that supports 4 gigs of RAM.

Apple should just admit defeat that live up to the fact that it is second best.

There seems to be a preoccupation with telling Apple they're "second best." Here's a little secret, they don't care. I'm a Mac user and I could care less if we get more than our usual 4% market share. Apple remains a targetted system, unlike the "I can be everything to everyone" operating system Windows has become. Maybe that's why Microsoft stock is one of the Top 10 worst-performing stocks of the last 5 years.

If sales were the only thing that mattered, a Chevrolet Cavalier would be more desirable than a Ferrari.

Maybe the reason some people have a preoccupation with telling Apple they are second best is because so many Mac aficionados seem to enjoy sharing their belief that Mac is the best desktop OS.

I just want to use the systems that work best (I enjoy my Xeon/Win2K machine a lot) and I get really sick and tired of MacHeads and their 'evil empire' talk. Perhaps it makes them feel better about using systems that lock them into one vendor to a degree that Microsoft could only dream about.

You gotta wonder just how much flak this will cause among Mac users and potential Apple buyers. People who already use the platform could care less about what can and can't be proven in tests, because they are already committed to a system that works better for them.
And newbies will continue to switch at the same plodding rate as ever because it just makes sense to some people, while to others it doesn't.

Different strokes.

Found it funny that folks get all bent out of shape that a few computer users seek an alternative to the behomouth Microsoft. There is no threat, relax, but Mac will be around for a good long time, performing reliably and dutifully, looking great, and being out-of-the box well equiped, if only for 5% of the market. I use both, and prefer Mac. Whatever. Both do there jobs, the Mac more consistently and reliably, the Dell Precision usually, but with MS Win XP, life ain't so great....

The new G5 dualies run windows better than 1/2 the PC's in my office do! Funny...

If the Mac runs Windows better than half the PCs in your office, that points to the PCs being the problem, not Windows.

Not 4GB, any 32-bit can address that much address space.

MORE than 4GB is what the Apple ads claimed; which is true.

Of course they're still around! Where do you think Microsoft and the other Wintel clone makers get all their splendid ideas from?

Face it: Whether popular or not, Apple is the innovator in the PC field. The first with a CDROM drive standard, the first to drop legacy ports in favor of USB. The first PC's to dispel the floppy disk; the first to move to the flat panel display. The list goes on and on.

We Mac users chuckle when hearing about "new" features in Windows that Mac users have had for years. Go ahead and be years behind in the technology field, we don't want you here anyway :)

I have to admit, I don't understand this case at all, and how it is a legal issue. Companies always make claims about their products like "the most luxurious midsize SUV" or "the most comfortable workboot" that can't really be proven true or untrue. I don't understand how claiming to have "the fastest computer," especially when the details of the exact tests done are usually in small print in the ad or available online, could possibly be misleading.

Actually, I do hate the G5 advertising, because it reminds me every day that I wish I had the money to afford one.

It's very funny to me how people will fight over what platform is better.

I use both Mac and WinTel every day (I run an ISP). I can tell you without a doubt that Mac's with OS X are many times better than the WinTel systems. But that's just me.

I come from a Unix background, and because of that I know how to use my computer efficiently. You just can't do the things you can do with Unix on WinTel. Simple things like changing your IP address is a chore in Windows. Even XP, although it's a lot quicker without the reboot.

As far as speed goes. I believe that the Mac's are faster than any other computers. Maybe not with some programs that are not optimized for the Mac platform. But when it comes to getting your work done, using the right tools, your going to be done quicker than a Windows user.

Another thing that I don't understand is the Windows users that are so against Macs, usually have never used Mac with OS X. Yet they still put them down. I guess that's called Faith.

Put it this way. I once had a job where I had the task of going to work at 5am to reboot all the Windows servers before the rest of the employees came in so there would not be any problems that day. Where I have a Linux system that has been running for 315 days serving 145 web sites on a 233MHz system with 128MB RAM. Stick that in your WinTel box and smoke it. (Mac's are just like FreeBSD/Linux but with a sane GUI.)

Hmmm...its been a year now since the introduction of the G5 PowerMac, and still nothing new interesting from the Wintel world to even come near it. This ruling sounds like the last dying gasp of ignorant PC users trying to validate themselves. Hmmm...Apple #3 in Wired Magazines most progressive companies, Microsoft #27, Dell #12 and Intel #24...yep, I hear some gasping. And lets see, the G5 single chip is about to be released in the iMacs...a CONSUMER mac...I'd say the game's over folks.
You die hard pc users sound like a bunch of alcoholics on skid row saying that you don't have a problem while your hands shake and you ask to borrow a dollar.
Sober up folks and smell the coffee, since Jobs came back and mac went UNIX core, your system looks more and more like an old VCR surrounded by DVD players.

Mac and Linux still exist for one reason: Microsoft. Face it, the primary reason that most people RUN these OS'es is-- they're not Microsoft. Hatred of Microsoft has become a near-cult in some quarters, and in order to get the "big bad bogeyman from Redmond," little lies are tolerated and encouraged.

The day that Mac and Linux can stand on their own, as opposed to needing their cult-like "we're not Microsoft" mantra for support, then Ballmer and Gates should fear.

I'm not a Microsoft OR a Mac groupie. I use Windows and Gentoo Linux on my system, and my motto always has been and always will be -- whatever gets the job done. Religion should be left in the church.

I like macs because the GUI is so colorful and they look cool in the store...but I guess that it's because I'm a graphic artist. I like to hang out in coffee shops and dress all in black and bash pcs, but I really don't have the time to do that too much because unlike my pc programmer friends, I'm working, and making money to lend them (poor saps). I really dont care about how they cobble together motherboards and test 64 bit beta Windows versions on their 32 bit machines...nor do I care that macs are slightly more expensive than equivilant pcs (like there even is an equivient pc for a G5..ha ha ha), probably because I can afford one...silly, easily amused and brainwashed artist that I am. Maybe in another year a 64 bit pc will hit the market, and maybe in a few years someone will actually come out with a useful linux app besides a word processor and an unreliable image editing app. I figure that by the time "Longstalled" comes out, macs will still be 5 years ahead of the Wintel cult (if they werent, wintel would have nothing to copy from, would they?)

Dell= betta; sure, thats why they are such class leading products with innovative technologies and high product standards; I am an apple service/sales tech and we (1 store in sydney, oz) have at least 3 switchers a day because people are basically tired and bored of buying cheap and incomplete (no FW/DVI/8XAGP) systems that get viruses every month. there is no 'winner' in this argument- we will all use what we want to use- it merely comes down to choice about systems and styl- its more about whether or not you care a lot about being 'different' to anyone else- maybe its a new socio-cultural thing? As resellers we give free service, repair, advice and even close friendship to customers that we genuinely care about- being 12yrs old and whining that 'they r sooo stoopid an cant run .exe' is not an argument for anything.
try a g5 and see why apple is so proud of producing such an accessible and powerful machine.

I don't know about Dell in the states but here in Canada I fund they are overpriced and charge too much for shipping, Anyway I 've used 64 bit AMD computers for about a year and I just got an Acer 64 bit NOTEBOOK (Compaq has a nice one too but I couldn't wait) and all seem fast to me. All run 64bit XP and the oldest one I only reboot about once every week or two
When i try a Mac on display somewhere it seems hard to use- there are menus at the top but the applications also have different menus - I never know what's running or where the folders go. And everything has cute names like chooser, finder, Sherlock ... I don't get it.

take a look at the AMD 64 bit processors - way cheaper than Intel and Apple and at least as fast . for you in USA Compaq is using AMD (Dell is not)

via Facebook 12 June, 2004 12:07

First off, any AMD Athlon 64 CPU can access OVER 4 GB of RAM without any additional hardware. The claim about the first 64 bit CPU is correct. It came out about 2 weeks before the Athlon 64s did. Why the ASA is comparing Apples to Dells in the first place is nonsense. Dell does not use AMD processors in their systems to their loss. It is well known in the PC community that the fastest PC processor in the world is the AMD Athlon FX 53, a 64 bit CPU

sherlock? chooser? its a telling clue to talk of going 'into a mac store' and quoting an ancient OS- try the new X OS- everyone admits that the former mac OS was irritating to use and in many ways, an ordeal to get used to- but the new OS is something to see, sure the 'startup' menu doesnt exist (or it would be a copy) but it is far more stable, user friendly and intuitive, and yes ;) I use both OSs at home and work... they both have their strengths but I prefer the speed (and lower price!) of a dual G5 for high end servers- a PC is good for being part of the longhorn herd... but it also puts me in range of the endless virii and hassles with buying anti-virus, installing the pointless patches and trying to restrain my irritation from beating laptops with my desklamp.

via Facebook 12 June, 2004 14:04

This 'rejection was based on the PREVIOUS systems...the new dual 2.5 gig systems DO run faster. If the chips from IBM had been available...(and the 970 FX WILL be here soon enough) systems using them will eat the AMD and INTEL chips as a snack.

Critics of the mac are always so funny to me. They make the same assumptions every time.
(1) People really enjoy dealing with often confusing technical issues
(2) People need 57,000 software programs

In EVERY case, without fail, those that actually USE a modern Mac that previously used a PC..
within 2 weeks of use would NEVER go back.
There are things the PC does VERY well and XP is the best OS for them so far...but it is still the product of a bloated and arrogant company, not really made to be the best of breed.

there's no doubt that the AMD 64 is better value (performance for money) than the G5

And I guess OS X (three versions!) is better than what it replaced but i don't see any reason to switch to Apple. I know how to move files from my camera to my computer and burn a DVD with XP why learn some totally different system that costs double

Actually Sony seems to integrate their devices well - you can use the same memory stick card in their phone, pda, pc, camcorder and tv to show/share pictures or video - now that's easy !

First of all I want to say that I'm a computer engineer and have used both platforms and both have their strengths and weaknesses.

I don't really think that the performance issue is that big a deal. Benchmarks are always a difficult thing to evaluate and easy to manipulate. Sorry Mac-fanatics, if you take the time to take a close look at the test setups and results and have some technical knowledge you'll see that in 90% of the cases PC hardware half the price of a G5 performs better in realworld applications. Anyway, both platforms have more than enough power for the things the average user does.

What I don't really like about Apple is their business policy. Actually waht they do ist extending the much critisized Microsoft approach (our OS everywhere...) to the next level by even forcing you to use certain hardware and charging loads of money for old, out-of-date hardware (G3,G4,...). Well you have old hardware in PC world too, but at least it cost close to nothing. While this approch certainly has advantages in some areas, Apply goes well beyond that level. What's the proprietory display interface supposed to be? There are international standards out there and I want to connect whatever display I want to my computer. And that's not a part that would affect the performance of my system or cause hardware troubles!!!

I don't like Dell for the same reason because they want to force you into using Intel chips. I think the coice should always be at the user, not at the seller. So I'd like to see a PowerPC version of Windows XP and a x86 Version of Mac OS X. (Then you could start with fair comparisons)

For the time being, Apple remains for me what it is: the "PC for dummies". I don't mean it in a negative way, there definatley is a place for such a product. Some people just want to use a computer without thinking about how things work. as a technically educated person for the time beeing I wont consider a much overprized product with too many restrictions.

I use a Mac and a PC in everyday use, I find the Mac is better for music and creating Java apps. Whereas I prefer using my PC for games and coding within C. I think it is wrong that Apple lied but each platform does have its own strengths and weaknesses, and as a developer I would like to see more interaction from Apple with other companies to produce CHEAP software for Mac OS X.

CEO2... 1% Perspiration & 99% Genius = Market Nicher status!

Then there are consumers, early adopters, gatekeepers, individuals and/or technophiles who have different levels of Genius and Perspiration...

Athlon 64 processor???? Thats in the home computing market. Quite a few commercially available home PCs are multi processor. There are some interesting papers detailing Apples benchmarking procedure and how the benchmark used heavily optimised code and chose unoptimised code depending on what platform they were testing.

Last thing they dont mention. Whats the point of being fast if you are not "road legal", with a PC I could play any game or application. With the Mac, umm, well, I could do a 0-60 with Photoshop. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

When Microsoft released the Vista Beta, there were claims that certain features were Microsoft Innovations.

Now, how come those claims were not examined and why was a warning not issued?

It's been going for years. Apple invents a technology,
Microsoft likes it, and they take it. They claim that it's their feature and that's the end of it.

So how come Apple slips once in their advertising, and
legal go nuts and issue warnings against them.

Somethings not right about that.
