Trojan horse found responsible for child porn

NEWS
A man accused of storing child pornography on his computer has been cleared after it emerged that his computer had been infected by a Trojan horse, which was responsible for transferring the images onto his PC.

Julian Green, 45, was taken into custody last October after police with a search warrant raided his house. He then spent a night in a police cell, nine days in Exeter prison and three months in a bail hostel. During this time, his ex-wife won custody of his seven year old daughter and possession of his house.

This is thought to be the second case in the UK where a "Trojan defence" has been used to clear someone of such an accusation. In April, a man from Reading was found not guilty of the crime after experts testified that a Trojan could have been responsible for the presence of 14 child porn images on his PC.

Trojan horses can be used to install a back door on a PC, allowing an attacker to freely access the computer. Using the back door, a malicious user can send pictures or other files to the victim's computer or use the infected machine to access illegal Web sites, while hiding the intruder's identity. Infected machines can be used for storing files without the knowledge of the computer's owner.

Kevin Hogan, senior manager at Symantec Security Response, told ZDNet UK that he has known Trojans to pretend to be a game, picture and even a Windows folder. "It is technically possible for a Trojan to set up someone's computer as a proxy machine. So you see a folder on your desktop, double click it and it executes."

According to Hogan, a Trojan back door can usually be dealt with by using an up-to-date antivirus software or a personal firewall.

Green told The Evening Standard that the experience wrecked his life because he was treated like a depraved sex fiend. "I had never been in trouble before. In cases like this it is not innocent until proved guilty, but the other way around," he said.

Green is reportedly planning on suing the police for compensation.

will Norton's keep the Trojan off of the computer?

I use both Norton Antivirus and Norton Personal Firewall. They do an excellent job of protecting my computer against viruses, worms, trojans and hackers. No security system is perfect (that includes Linux, whose users might try to make you think otherwise), but a system that is properly protected with an antivirus program, a firewall and kept up to date can and will keep your system safe. Make sure that you keep you OS, as well as your antivirus and firewall, up to date with the latest security patches. Hackers aren't going to waste their time trying to compromise a secure, up to date system. There are far too many insecure systems that can be taken advantage of to bother trying. Also, it does not hurt to regularly check your system's security against one of several online scanners that will probe your system for security weaknesses.

I noticed the article failed to identify which trojan it was. Is this due to the fact that they couldn't find a specific one or is this so that the real sickos can't disguise their system as infected

Disgusting.

His life ruined over 14 pictures? They should be doing more to distroy the source of these images and raise awareness and understanding, not ruining the lives of the innocent!

It is easy to setup someones computer so that it looks like they have spent months downloading nothing but child porn. The police know this and yet still prosecute wrongly. It would be advisable for the police to learn about the tell tale signs of computer related sex offences and then to act on these signs to discover if the suspect is a risk to the public. I hope that this gets sorted because It must be very embarassing and potentially life wrecking for individuals who have to suffer through allegations such as these. Either take all porn off the internet and protect our children or prosecute the networks/servers that allow this sort of stuff to be hosted.

I had a bad experience with a porn trojan, but thankfully it was just embarrassing as it was adult porn rather than child porn.

I was helping out a woman friend (who I only know a little) by downloading a song track from a singer she was into. One of the files was zip rather than mp3 and as it was smaller than the rest I downloaded it.

I should have known better than run the file (I am an IT contractor!) but we were in a hurry and did not spot it was a program not an mp3. As I opened the file my web browser took on a life of its own and started opening to various porn sites. As I closed one another opened. My new friend was sitting with me as this happened!

I later discovered that it had added links in my start menu, it added links on my desktop, they were all over the place. My machine looked like I was an avid visitor to these sites.

As I say, thankfully, it was not child porn sites that the trojan launched and installed links to on my machine, but it could just have easily been. If it had been child porn sites I don't know what my female friend would have done or whether she would have understood what had happened. I am not sure she understood as it was...

I know of a guy whose nephew borrowed his computer and then accussed him of accessng child porn as he found links to these sites on the PC. As you can imagine this caused big trouble in the family.

Maybe the nephew was downloading mp3's and got another version of the trojan I found and without realising it loaded lots of child porn links onto his uncle's computer...

If i suspected someone I would look to see how obvious the links were. Nobody who lets someone else use their machine will be too likely to have lots of links in obvious places where they can be found easily (unless they are a very naive user).

Response to Anonymous from USA:
First of all you have to tell your lawyer to learn how much he could about spyware (he just have to make a search "spyware" with Google) and read every advices into it. That´s the best choice. To not mention any of the best software here he could test it with some
and tell the investigators to run them in your computer and tell the judge what they found - hundreds if not thousands of spyware, hijackers, dialers most of them responsible for that porn child into your computer. I runned mine very recently and despite my concerns and experience during years, i catch a teen sex dialer into my computer (teensex is the name of the dialer).
Your lawyer must read all stuff concerning evidence eliminator programs because it s very important what they say about the porn stuff that people has into the computers even without knowing that and the way those programs can avoid us to be in jail simply because we don´t know how to radically eliminate that junk. Evidence eliminators or wipe files programs can do that with files that we suspected to have coming from suspected sources (porn child dialers).

Carlos Cruz, one of the most famous portuguese entertainers is also in jail acused of child abuse.
Recently one of the accusations against him (at least according newspapers said), it was that investigators have found child porn into his computer. Days later this accusation was proved false and the investigators said to the media that it was not true and that they had never said that.
In the meanwhile who repair the negative effects (even for the process itself) of this false accusation against him?
Despite what investigators said that they didn´t found anything that prove he had child porn into his computer, after so many accusations (some of them already proved as false), he is already treated as guilty
by the media and public opinion and only an advised and experienced judge is the one capable of avoiding Carlos Cruz to be placed in jail for several years.

Can someone tell me how we can locate the actual residence of the companies or individuals infecting our PCs with Trojan Horses? We have some rather sophisticated attorneys in the US, Canada and the UK. What we need to do is initiate powerful damage lawsuits against them, piercing their corporate veils, and filing judgments against them throughout the civilized world. Criminal complaints would help also. And, governments should be pressured to bring action and acknowledge judgments and injunctions against this scum that places any kind of porn on our PCs for our children to see.

Any of you trial lawyers out there have any ideas?

find out where the troojan horse worm is installed on ur puter. then when you found this out you gotta go to that file (this is the tricky part-you gotta find where the particular foldeer is on your puter first). when there don't i repeat do not open the trojan virus-this will crash the system-the right click on the trojan icon, left click on propreties, left click on dmgedne155584222295877745400165023385059xfttdrg.exe (long file name i know u might want to write it down) double check it is the right file before clicking on it. once you have opened it quickly left click on file then disable then yes then temperarily then yes then ok.in front of you will be a screen full to bursting with all the sites trojan has accessed on yuor pc. when you find the particular file right click on it then left click on expand then you will have a couple of file names eg. 455581426602154998230128.al, what this is, is the pc hackers individual internet network id. this will help you trace the pc that is using your pc to open internet files download internet files and basically put you in the position that you're in now. if you need further instruction on how to do this please feel free to email me at nicholas_dyer2003@yahoo.com

Nov 2004. UK. If you are being investigated for posessing images of child porn, even if you have never viewed them you will be convicted. This is happening to a friend of mine who owns a computer shop and has over the years backed up thousands of customers hard drives onto cds, but never viewed them. He also downloaded music from newsgroups. onto cd, to sort through at a later date. The police are bastards and will try and get as many people convicted as possible, as they have targets to achieve. This poor man is married and has two children, which social services have banned him from being alone with. The local newspaper have brandished his name on the front page of the newspaper, even though he has not been charged. He is 100% innocent, but the law says it has to make an example of him. This is the kind of Police State we live in.
You can't protect yoursef from this kind of conviction, as you won't even know it's in your computer until the police raid you and accuse you. There is no solicitor out there who can defend you, as no one in the courts of law has enough computer knowledge to realise that this is not a crime, but an occurance that could happen to any one of us without our knowledge.

Anon.

I have now been investigated for a period of months for this type of offence, which by the way, I have not comitted in any way.
During the police investigations and interview, they threw as much Sh*t against the wall regarding me having a camera (Film) and taking pictures of children. They even showed me a bundle of negatives but not their image. Stupid thing is that I KNOW FOR DEFINITE that I have not taken any pictures at all or downlaoded anything.

Yesterday I went back to the police station and they basically told the solicitor that there hadent been any pictures on the negatives at all, they just wanted to see what my reaction was when I was told. Now you see what type of bastards they are.

Amongst all of these things there are a couple of points worth mentioning - I had umpteen viruses on my pc, I was stupid and didn't have a virus scanner until lately, many of them were trojans - Will they bring that up?.

Secondly and more importantly to me above all of this, I absolutely hate anything to do with the abuse of children, and why is this. I was abused for two years as a child! it wasn't nice (In fact it hurt, it hurt a lot both physically and mentally now) I am struggling to cope with this at present - the police don't know this at all, they wouldnt be bothered anyhow.

Any suggestions at all - I go to court next week to plead (Not guilty of course)

Check the definition of "witchhunt". Essentially a suspect is considered guilty until proved innocent; compelled to try to prove a negative. At last the Trojan defence is stopping police prosecutions in their tracks. Perhaps now the police will get their priorities in order, and stop making prosecution decisions based on a Victorian fetish over "dirty" pictures. It costs some £2,000 to make a basic forensic examination of a hard drive. Multiply this by the several hundred thousand suspects, and you get some idea of potential police expenditure on this pointless exercise. This is just to decide if a case is worth pursuing. And the police are funded out of local Council Tax. No wonder the police are addicted to income from speed cameras.

My company found child porn photos on my hard drive. I never even knew they existed. I've done several scans before I turned in the computer, but no Trojan horse. Could there have been a Trojan horse at one time and then eliminated with a scan? Would there be a record of a past Trojan horse?
Thanks

Hi a VERY GOOD POINT. I am on the sex offenders register for 5 years after taking wot woz on the table, on offer by the police. I had 12 t.horses on my comps it was third hand and the police found 34 kiddy porn pictures on my computer. I did NOT DOWNLOAD THEM!
i am not intrested in that stuff.

I had my family home raided in that morning around 7am by UK police, to my shock and my fathers, i had to police officers standing at my bedroom room arresting me for downloading kiddy porn!

WHAT THE HELL!

Anyway after a very long battle and confused state, my lawers hired a computer expert to look at my computer and found 12.t.horses on the harddrive, the pics could not have been seen by me as they were a weird file format, and deep in my hardrive plus the police could not say when they were downloaded or at what time of day.

But they still charged me! they dident even say anything about the t.horses to us until we hired a computer expert at the cost of 10,000 pounds of taxpayers money.

I was told i may win my case in court by my lawers however i could have to wait another year before it was over. and they could not say for sure i would be found not guilty. if found guilty of this crime i could have be locked up for upto five years.

so after a long talk with my family and lawers i decided to accept what the police offered me after reading our expert computer guy. A police caution,
which also means i have to sign on to the sex offenders register for 5 years. Cop visits to my home, have to tell the police of any jobs i have, if i change my address, name, get a tatoo etc.. my life is no longer mine...

Its theres im just a puppet and they pull the strings.

Why you ask was i arrested in the first place. Well someone had traced my ip address via the internet. But it was not me behind the ip address, someone had cloned my ip address, is my guess. But does not matter cops saw it was being used my me (offically) and arrested me and the rest is history.

Now i chose to accept the police caution, and say i commited a crime when infact i DID NOT DO IT. because my life would have been even more distroyed if the went to court my name and address would have been printed in the papers in my area, my familys life would have also been distoryed as even one they no, would have then known i had been arrested and what for.

I could not live with that, even if i had gone to crown court and been found NOT GUILTY many people would still not beleve it and hate us, attack us. maybe even worse.

WOULD YOU LET THAT HAPPEN TO YOUR FAMILY? NO I WOULD'ENT AND DID'ENT.

My lifes a mess but my family are safe and well :o)

But if the legal system was different and i could go to court and defend myself without worring about the public or the press. then i would have and in my thoughts i would have been cleared of the charges and be free. But im sad to say, that does not happen well not at the moment anyway.

If im not guilty, how many others are out there around the world. who are also not guilty or the crimes they have been forced to say there guilty of. to protect there loved ones? 10, 100, 1000?

I dont no, but i am guessing its a high number.

We need to look at our legal system NOW, and rethink. if there guilty them by all means let people no, but if theres any dout. then they should be protected at least until after a trial and a verdict of guilty is heard!

Well im 23 now and still have 4 years left on the sex offenders register. i trust no one anymore because what this system and the police have done to me.

I cant even look at kids now, without think "will people think im a pervert?" I cross the road if i see a kid on my side. This system has made me feeling like a sick pedo, that never ever wants to be around kids. But wait, I AM NOT! I DID NOT DO ANYTHING!

i was a normal healthy 21 year old, a girlfriend a job, and happy family life and world. Now i feel guilty all the time for something i did not do, i am v

Yes true, and in my case it cost the police around 2,500 grad to look at my comp then theres the other costs of police interviews, lawer fee and a computer expert for the defence which in my case cost 10,000 pounds. i was lucky to have got that much from legal aid. But i got it. And found out the police had no real case against me.

The images they found with Encase were deep in my harddrive and where not classed as "live" files nor could the police say when the files where downloaded . So i may not have even been at my computer at the time or day they where downloaded. Also they found around 12-14 trojan horses and a virus on the harddrive.

None of all this came out until my lawers hired a computer expert (who infact teaches the police and other people about computers and Encase (the software used by police in the UK to look at harddrives).

But we did not get this information until AFTER I WAS CHARGED BY THE POLICE. So the police got to show a false inforamtion to the CPS to get me charged. But if it was two sided, and we could have gotten a computer expert in staight away then i dont think i would have been charged. But we were not ALLOWED to get legal aid for this or to do anything with the computer until i was charged. A very very unfair system....

And the police are more than happy to take advantage of this!

Hi GUS,

Firstly, sorry to hear about your problems. Thats really bad stuff dude.

I no a bit about this topic as i to have been arrested for this crap in 2003, i was not guilty and had many dif viruses and ofcourse trojan horses on my hard drive.

I would say yes to your question and your lawers should hire an expert computer person to look at your harddrive for viruses, sec problems, trojan etc..

This WILL NOT COST YOU ANYTHING, cos legal aid will pay for it. mine cost 10,000 pounds.

I stay this because in my case the police DID NOT tell me about the viruses and t.horses on my harddrive. I was told by the guy we hired for the defence. He will find things like that and WILL TELL YOU ABOUT IT.

Next, it was said by my mother to the police that i was raped by my step dad when i was 10-13 yrs old. This was not true, but she thinks it because she says she found a child porn vhs at our house that belonged to my ex-step-dad. And she said he admitted owning it, it had boys and men having sex in it. Ive always told my mum i was never abused but she does not beleve it. Anyways she told the police after i was arrested that i was abused by him. A well they (the police) tryed to use this against me, staying in interview i was abused as a boy and now, i am like that and have become a pedo.

This is all crap and very hurtful on top of all the other crap they say. i would say DO NOT TELL THE POLICE ABOUT YOUR CHILDHOOD ABUSE.

but i would say after your case is over. Tell the police about it, who what where etc. but after your case is over. They will only twist things, if you report it when ur case is pending.

Lastly, good luck and keep fighting u've done nothing wrong. take care :o)

Protect your computer from spyware, adware, trojans. history etc.

I use these products to help find and delete the "bad stuff", That i never wanted or asked for.

Evidence Eliminator - not free (very good)
This will NOT look for trojan horses but it will delete them if there in places that the software wipes clean eg free harddrive space etc.. It does alot of great things to much to meantion here. do a google for more info about it.

counterspy - not free

counterspy WILL locate some spyware and trojan horses, and with it can also block them for getting on the computer in the first place, or remove them if it/they do get on, and it will alert you about this. bepending on the software settings you have set up.

windows washer www.webroot.com - trial available

window washer will delete and shred history, cache, cookie, visited sites windows files. that trace you. and if theres child porn in you cache that you did not no about it will distroy them. up-to 100 shreds per file so no one can recover the files!

spy sweeper www.webroot.com - trial available

spyware sweeper will also scan your computer for spyware adware and more important Trojan Horses, and remove them. it also has "active protection" like counterspy which will try to stop trojans and spyware getting on your computer.

Ad-Adware SE - FREE

this product is free very good and used by millions of people worldwide, but most of the software on this list is :) but this ones free. however no "active protection is avaiable for this free software.

xoftspy - not free

xoftspy is by far the fastest software of its kind that ive used, it has regular updates available for it
normally 1 every 2-3 days. I use this and spyware sweeper the most.

spybot search and distroy - FREE

Just great, its not the fastest, but it will help to protect you from, trojans, keyloggers, adware, spyware.

CWShredder - FREE

not updated very often but good none the less, this software is free and will scan your harddrive for all the CWS types of trojan horses.

TKCleaner - FREE

i have only just found this one and so far i'd say dont bother with it. Its mean't to look for trojans but only seems to look for 1 trojan that normally located in one place. looks very old and the site who own it are no more! so theres no updates for it EVER!

you should download the free ones and buy at least one of the good ones and UPDATE IT AND USE IT. As your anti-virus will NOT keep all trojans of your computer not even norton or mcAfee's antiviruses.

Hope this helps some of you, and not end up like i did. Since then i have learn't alot about online protection. If i'd only known more about this topic back then :(

I honestly don't believe a word that these guys are saying, no one is putting child pornography on your computers but you. I know the reasons and motivations behind trojan horses, and uploading kiddy porn to someone elses computer has no benifit whatsoever. Hackers will commonly bundle files with sudo-pedo labels in the hopes that they will be downloaded and executed, infecting the dirty host. More than likely you were turned in by these so called "kiddie porn uploaders"

My son is in jail because the son of a b... of the shop where the pc was to be repared put his nose everywhere. My son is a GP and was researchig on child porn via internet to contest the work made by E. Quayle and Tylor whose work was the base for the Copine resolution. The police did not believe nor the judge. The assistance of the barrister was useless. They're afraid of the public opinion and nobody want defend that kind of "perverted" people. Now my son has been fired, registered as sex offender (only UK, in the EU, uses such register) and marked as a criminal for ever. Think! He was tryng to help children. Moral: Never bring your pc to repare. Destroy it. Put it on fire. Better, eat it. Never trust the police, they're incompetents.

Many of these Trojans and other viruses that are used to upload child pornography to a persons computer, is done solely one main reason. To turn a poor unsuspecting law abiding citizen’s computer in to a remote controlled child porn web site server. These people that run chills porn sites are criminals, and they don’t want to get caught. What better way to stay safe from the law, then implicating someone else who is not computer literate enough to be able to protect them selves from this type of attack.

The last statement I made is not meant to belittle anyone. I am a certified computer expert, and I don’t expect experts from other fields to know as much as I do about computers. For example, I take my taxes to a tax expert, or m car to a certified auto mechanic. I would be lost in either of those fields.

This may sound bad to many people, but it’s the truth. You can do your own research on the internet and learn this.

The Trojan/Virus on your computer was most likely put there by another unsuspecting person that has a similar Trojan/Virus on that computer. The problem here is that once a criminal has control of another person’s computer, that criminal can use that controlled computer as a proxy to gain control over other computers. The s/he sets all these controlled computers up to do whatever they want them to do, such as controlling other computers, or storing pornography for an illegal site, etc. etc. Your computer could be the fifth computer on a line of proxy computers being controlled. Because of this, the police will find it virtually imposable to track down who the criminal is.

So my advice to you is to find a computer savvy friend, and completely delete ALL information on your computer and reinstall the programs you want on it. This involves reformatting the hard drive.

Sadly, the only good way for the average citizen to fight this problem is to make every effort you can to protect your computer from attacks. And for those of you who are motivated, get involved with tracking down the real criminals.

This whole ordeal you are going through is just plain wrong. I really feel for you, it’s just not right. But here is some food for thought.

People in general are stupid. They are more willing to believe something bad about a person than the truth. I can think of a few times of being guilty of this myself. No one is immune to it. It’s an insane desire to here about someone’s dirty laundry, and the ability to have a tangible target to blame society’s problems on someone. You say you are receiving anonymous hate mail. And I suspect some of them are death treats. If you do win back custody of your daughter, she may be targeted by these same ignorant people that refuse to believe your proven innocence. If these people have enough information to find you with these letters, they will also find your daughter if she is living with you. This does not mean I think you should give up on your daughter’s custody. But you should be prepared to move for safety’s sake.

I am not in your situation, so I can not say for sure what I would do about the custody issue. I hope for the best for you.

I hope you get to read this reply as I feel deeply for you. My man is serving time for what you were accused of. He refused to plead guilty to something he hadnt done, so he had the book thrown at him. The prosecution used loads of 'dirty tricks' but the jury had made their mind up, despite an it 'expert' saying that there was a trojan etc on the pc. i joined a support group called 'pafaa and sofap'. They may be of some help and support to you. Their website is www.pafaa.co.uk. You are not alone as you will see on the site.
good luck

You obviously dont know what you are talking about and are just attempting to be controversial. I pray god it never happens to you. It can and does happen because there are sick people who want a platform for peddling this filth that isnt easily traced back to them. FACT

You obviously have some knowledge of how these things work Ddredar and are open to the possibility that innocent men can get accused/charged/convicted. Would you be willing to correspond with me about how someones pc can be used in this way? My partner has been convicted because the cps are now less willing to accept the trojan defence because people who are doing these things are also using this as a defence . Solicitors and Barristers still have little idea of how the internet works so therefore do not know the right questions to ask of an IT 'expert' to prove a case.I would be greatful for any help/advice you are willing to give me.

Hello, I don't come from your country, from down under in fact. I have just been through 8 months of hell after being raided and accused of having child porn on my computer - which actually turned out to be a 34 year old porn star! My name was published in the paper, my life is basically over. The only recourse I have now is to sue the police officer who arrested me! My barrister here was fantastic and the case went to a committal trial where the charges were dismissed after just 1 hour! Barristers like him don't come along often and nor do they suggest suing the police lightly, but it turns out that it came out in court that I should not have been arrested in the first place, and my fellow says I have a good case. My life is over in terms of my marriage, my access to my young son, my job, career, and generally my reputation! But I intend to fight back, maybe I was meant to go through this journey as I have such a strong case against them!

Google Translate:
This is not a case of Trojans.
Have been arrested in Spain over four thousand users of P2P networks eDonkey for alleged child pornography.

The agents conducted without judicial supervision P2P tracking and tools not approved.

They are people with guns hunting show.

Who enters the child pornography on P2P networks?
Who wins with this witch hunt?
