Security company McAfee has cut just under two percent of its global workforce.
ZDNet UK understands that about 100 people have been made redundant from various parts of the company. Before the cuts, McAfee employed about 6,100 staff. Most of the redundancies involved engineering employees. McAfee has over 350 researchers globally.
McAfee played down the cuts in an email statement sent to ZDNet UK on Friday.
"Two weeks ago a small restructuring affecting less than two percent of our global employee base was carried out," said McAfee director of worldwide public relations Joris Evers.
"We eliminated a small number of positions in certain parts of the business, while redirecting funds to positions and initiatives that support the most strategic opportunities for the company."
Evers said part of the cuts included rationalising job functions that had been duplicated through recent McAfee acquisitions, but declined to comment any further.
In 2009, McAfee acquired MX Logic, Solidcore Systems, and Endeavor Security.
A source in the UK, who was close to the redundancy process, said one of the researchers from McAfee's Avert Labs in the UK had been made redundant. A second source, who also wished to remain anonymous, said a further two researchers had been made redundant in Europe.
