The magic that makes Google tick

The hardware
"Even though it is a big problem", said Hölzle, "it is tractable, and not just technically but economically too. You can use very cheap hardware, but to do this you have to have the right software."

Google runs its systems on cheap, no-name IU and 2U servers -- so cheap that Google refers to them as PCs. After all each one has a standard x86 PC processor, standard IDE hard disk, and standard PC reliability - which means it is expected to fail once in three years.

On a PC at home, that is acceptable for many people (if only because they're used to it), but on the scale that Google works at it becomes a real issue; in a cluster of 1,000 PCs you would expect, on average, one to fail every day. "On our scale you cannot deal with this failure by hand," said Hölzle. "We wrote our software to assume that the components will fail and we can just work around it. This software is what makes it work.

One key idea is replication. "This server that contains this shard of the Web, let's have two, or 10," said Hölzle. "This sound sounds expensive, but if you have a high-volume service you need that replication anyway. So you have replication and redundancy for free. If one fails you have 10 percent reduction in service so no failures so long as the load balancer works. So failure becomes and a manageable event."

In reality, he said, Google probably has "50 copies of every server". Google replicates servers, sets of servers and entire data centres, added Hölzle, and has not had a complete system failure since February 2000. Back then it had a single data centre, and the main switch failed, shutting the search engine down for an hour. Today the company mirrors everything across multiple independent data centres, and the fault tolerance works across sites, "so if we lose a data centre we can continue elsewhere -- and it happens more often than you would think. Stuff happens and you have to deal with it."

A new data centre can be up and running in under three days. "Our data centre now is like an iMac," said Schulz." You have two cables, power and data. All you need is a truck to bring the servers in and the whole burning in, operating system install and configuration is automated."

Working around failure of cheap hardware, said Hölzle, is fairly simple. If a connection breaks it means that machine has crashed so no more queries are sent to it. If there is no response to a query then again that signals a problem, and it can cut it out of the loop.

That is redundancy taken care of, but what about scaling? The Web grows every year, as do the number of people using it, and that means more strain on Google's servers.

Talkback

Hello
One thing that ticks me off about google is that it desplays multiple results on a search query from the same web site.
How hard can it be to limit the exposer to one url per query?
Is it logical to have a website show up hundreds of times on a search query?
Try searching for the word "algarve" (region in Portugal).
I think it is googles mission to deliver me to a website where I can find the content I am looking for, and not to worry about holding me up to reach the cookie jar and sink it down my mouth.
Show me where the supermarket is, I will find the shelf!
Thank you.

Dude... don't know what you're talking about. Tried your search and got 10 results for 10 different websites listed. Google DOES eliminate results that are alike.

Hi Carlos
Thank you for your feedback.
Try google.co.uk
Search for "algarve car hire"
You will notice as I have (saved the results in the case you would like me to send them to you)
that the same website:
www.portugal-linha.pt
comes in at 2nd and 3rd position, if you continue down the list you will find it time and time again.
Are the results relevant?
Well... I guess one of the results is, all others are repeats, that point to the same web page...

Open letter to Google.

Hello my dear Googlers

My comment has nothing to do with google suggest, I find it very useful.
Now what really squeezes the sh.. out of me is ONE THING and this is it:

Why the hell do you allow a website to show up multiple times on one search query?

Why GOOGLE? Why?

It seams so simple to deal with, and trust me when I say, that I AM NOT A GENIUS!

Is there not a way of eliminating, the multiple exposer of a given website by means of it´s URL?

If you go ahead and search for "algarve car" you will come up with this:

www.portugal-cars.com/ algarve-car-hire/Aljezur-Car-Hire.html
www.portugal-cars.com/algarve-car-hire/ car-rental-in-faro-portugal.html
www.portugal-cars.com/ algarve-car-hire/car-hirein-portugal.html
www.portugal-cars.com/ algarve-car-hire/Quarteira-Car-Hire.html
www.portugal-cars.com/algarve-car-hire/aljezur.html
www.portugal-cars.com/ algarve-car-hire/autoverhuur-algarve.html

Etc.........................

Now please excuse me if I sound dramatic, but, HOW HARD can it be to eliminate the following results after the first one has been shown?

1 URL per search! That in my opinion would reduce your 8 BILLION pages to what?

Is this in your interest?
Would you be hurting OTHER interests?

Well bottom line is....

It is not my business...

Keep providing a great service, the new tool is great, and all I ask is...

Let me know if someone actually reads this.

Thank You

Hilton Santos

P.S.

1-I can tell that every URL "is" different, from the others, my idea is for you to maybe find a way to process the first 20 or 30 characters of a url up to the end of .com .net .org .whatever and then ban all results, except the FIRST!

typical question from someone who has no idea what they are asking for.

HOW HARD can it be?
have you tried doing this? Have you tried to put up thousands of computers and make a "slight" adjustment on a program running on the whole network?
If you have not tried doing it, dont pretend to understand how it works. You have no idea what you are asking for. You can probably send some money to Google so they can have the resources to process your request... Its not like you actually paid Google to do the search for you right? You want a personalized search engine? Go make one yourself. It's relatively easy to do... well, that is, if you have the brain for it.

Very dear Frustrated Research and Development specialist

I am sorry you feel this way...
Why don´t you come over to the Algarve Portugal region and relax...

Well on to your comment:

" HOW HARD can it be?
have you tried doing this? Have you tried to put up thousands of computers and make a "slight" adjustment on a program running on the whole network? "

I have never tryed doing this and once in a week I must kick the computer I use at the office in order for the printer to work...
The slight ajustment here is this, if your toe does not work use a hamer...

" If you have not tried doing it, dont pretend to understand how it works. You have no idea what you are asking for. You can probably send some money to Google so they can have the resources to process your request... Its not like you actually paid Google to do the search for you right? "

I have not tryed doing it, but I think they use voodo tecnology, along with chanting and chicken heads... I may be wrong...

Now when you mention money, we actualy pay Google as we have AdWord accounts...
We would maybe, pay less, if the results were better... Stupid Hilton to worry about the quality of Google results...

You want a personalized search engine? Go make one yourself. It's relatively easy to do... well, that is, if you have the brain for it.

Now if I would want a personalized search engine, I would not need to make one myself!
Google has AdSense for search! yeppi!
And guess what? The search results may come up in orange! wow!
Try this website:

The final version will be at:

Now to the Brain issue...
Pal, I am sure you must be a million times smarter then I, so why the hell did you read my comment, and why did you answer to it?
If I answered to every crappy comment I found on the net I would have to quit my job...

Ohhh well...
Good luck on solving the worlds problems, I am one who thinks that if People talk about the problems they encounter, they will be solved sooner or later..
Maybe you can solve this one for Goo?

I guarantee that at least they will send you a Thank You E-Mail! yeppi!

Dear Hilton,

First of all, please forgive me for the bad english.
Good afternoon. I don't think very ethical from your part to criticize other's websites listed on google. If you want to criticize google then e-mail them with general matters. Never with particular cases. I think that might not be the best way to gain customers or positions on google. I know several websites, experts in many matters that only show up on page 14 on google and on yahoo thay're on page 1. Can you imagine. I hope you try to compete with other companies in defferent ways then criticizing their marketing on the internet. Criticize Google if you want, but never pointing your finger to a particular website.
