Last month's T-Mobile's US Sidekick service, run by Microsoft subsidiary Danger, lost a significant amount of customer data, raising questions about the viability of the cloud for storage. At the recent Storage Expo show in London, ZDNet UK talked to two experts — Iron Mountain Digital technology vice president Steve Blumenau and Double-Take Software business development manager Peter Laudenslager — about the cloud and the twin issues of security and reliability.

its not the storage thats in danger?its the people having access to it and sellint it to highest bidder? correct me if i,m wrong but t,mobile has just had a load of data sold? that prooves how safe any data is[EVEV IN A CLOUD]IN OTHER WORDS VITUAL

Anytime a human is involved security flies out the window. Even, so called,
secure online storage is open to attacks by company IT departments, and there is always a risk of hardware failure resulting in data loss.

T-mobile not only had their data sold by their staff, but also lost customer data when sub-contractors updated kit without a backup! Among the sub contractors were a Microsoft subsidiary and a large service company. I've been around in this business for almost 50 years and I still have a healthy distrust of all embracing solutions.

All this talk of security applies to internal as well as Cloud based storage. Surely the point is that with Cloud based storage and backup then smaller firms benefit from the industrial scale of the storage, backup and associated security facilities that they would otherwise not have been able to afford.
Think about this just in terms of disaster recovery if their own IT facility were to go down they don't have any data recovery issues.

the concept and actual use is very good i use it to store dos items which are their and undoubtably accessed by others but ,to harness it is in my opinion a mistake,[i run a diesel car economic] i see gas propane cars are half the price on fuel, but as soon as a lot use it it will go up,on par? this cloud is the same if its harnessed and utilised the [big fish] will rip us all off ]just like oil remember were all paying to access the free internet? sez lezlow

The thing cloud's do level the playing fields for smaller business and also offer them some peace of mind, but alas lezlow has brought up another valid point we all assume that the cost's reduce when more customer's come along, but some times they actual go up.

So I suppose its going to be like any other business to get the best deal people will haft to shop around, and keep there ear's to the ground for horror stories.
