Gmail: a first look

PREVIEW

Google's yet-to-launch Gmail is, arguably, already as well-known as free email stalwarts such as Microsoft's Hotmail. In part, this is due to the high expectations generally placed on anything from the Google stable. But the debate over privacy issues surrounding the advertising-driven business model that Gmail will use, when it launches, is also a factor.

Google has not yet set a date for the widespread availability of Gmail (this still appears to be several months away), but it has offered 1,000 trial accounts, and ZDNet has had a good look at the beta version. When it does launch, Gmail is certain to see a deluge of users signing up. Those who worry about the privacy issues will probably ignore it, but many will find that its features and convenience outweigh any security concerns.

1GB of storage! MS must be scrapping or substantially revamping the marketing/sales model for extended hotmail facilities.

However, if Hotmail is a fertile medium for spammers, would the possible success of Gmail simply be more grist to the mill?

You have to remember that Gmail is still beta. They may be including a virus scanner in the public release. Also, I've heard, but not tested this yet, that Gmail does not allow you to receive executables.

You can see archived mail in the "All Mail" link. It's in the screenshots, I can't believe the reviewer didn't even notice that. Maybe he should spend more time exploring and/or reading the Gmail help pages. It's clearly stated in there.

Check out spymac in the meanwhile www.spymac.com
It's got 1Gb and other stuff too, all free. Just a shame that it is orientated towards Mac users (although not limited too!)

The very nature of googles search algorithms means that it will see mass migration and mailings very easily. The matching of the appropriate advert to your inboxes recent content will only be effective if it makes sure it is matching things that are relevant to you, the user/consumer.

In effect gmail will probably sell the lists of spamming addresses it has to yahoo and hotmail so they can tighten their mailboxes up!

Also finding the origins of emailed viruses will be much easier to track.

In regards to the comments on MSN revamping its systems Bill Gates was reported to say that hotmail will soon be offering 1Terrabyte's worth of email space, purely on the basis that it would beat Google's amount.

I'd say the only big worry would be encrypting personal files tightly.

1 GB of mail space is a great thing to happen but there are questions which need to be answered.

1. People may start filling up their inboxes with voice messages and mpegs necessiating regular deletes.

2. Also how about the gmail loading speed once it goes public with a huge expected subscription.

3. Fear of charging fees once a subscriber settles with the account

I've had a gmail account for about 2 or 3 weeks now and I must say it is awsome. I especially like having 3 MB of e-mail and it still says 0%!

It dosn't have any fancy rich text editing, like bold and italics, yet but I think it will come.

The ads, what ads? I hardly ever see any ads on the right side of the page. Only in long e-mails do I ever see any ads. and they are so easy to ignore that I forget about them, I have even found USEFUL sites from teh targeted ads!

I'm too afriad to test the spam filter though.... I have no spam ANd want to keep it that way, That is hotmail's job :)

It has to be a lot better than Spymac. Spymac is so slow you would never need that much space. I think it is the slowest download of all email adresses I have tried.

An archived e-mail which is not listed in inbox, is accessible from the "All Mail" listing. The author mentioned in the article that an archived mail can be seen only when searching which therefore is not correct

Hi,

In the article you state:

"Archiving is a term that simply means an email (or discussion) ceases to show up in the inbox. It will still be included by default in searches, but that appears to be the only way to reach it -- there's no option to view the archive in Gmail."

This is not quite right. Any archived (not Trashed) email shows up under the "All Mail" label by default.

GMail rocks!

Thanks
Scott

It seems the only way to get an account is through association with a current beta tester.

I was given the chance to set up my account by a friend of mine - who was himself given his account through a friend who actually managed to be one of the initial beta testers.

It seems the reward for pointing out bugs as a beta tester is the ability to give three accounts to friends and family?

It's all about who you know, I guess!! :-)
