Dell Inspiron 5100

Dell Inspiron 5100 image Member Review The fan cooling (actually, the "lack of" cooling system) is a major problem. It seems that the tech support guys walk you through a maze of "try this, and see what happens" before they tell you that it will cost you an arm and both legs to replace...

CPU Frequency Scaling

Blog Sure enough, it did the trick - as soon as I rebooted, the CPU monitor showed the frequency dropping from 1.6GHz to 800 MHz when the system was idle, the cooling fan didn't run nearly as much (mostly not at all), and the bottom of the Mini-Note...

Processor benchmarks: Intel versus AMD

Talkback But at 2500+ (1834 MHz) with a Radeon 9800 pro my system is at full graphics 1024 X 768 in Far Cry so I haven't really needed this option at this point other than I know that my system can handle this under stock cooling.

Intel and the correct use of power

Blog Incidentally, this means that if your computer has poor or faulty cooling, your chip will throttle back to save its life at the expense of performance - which is why Intel is also testing fluid dynamic models of case cooling.

Apple Power Mac G5 dual 2.5GHz

Apple Power Mac G5 dual 2.5GHz image Member Review The cooling system is quiet and gives the machine some character, but I'm worried that it's not quite right.under very high load I've had the machine go to sleep on me twice, but no work was lost. It's about as expensive as a similarly-specified PC...

Data centres get greener

Blog What's interesting is the way that the cooling system has been designed with the idea of lowering costs: there's an ambient air cooler that kicks in when outside temperatures dip below 10 degrees C, a big diesel generator, but also a flywheel...

Out of the cardboard box thinking on green data centres

Blog Cardboard courses dust, and dust is the enemy of the data centre, it clogs cooling fans and makes the whole system work harder and run hotter. Expensive kit and building costs aside, power and cooling eats electricity and consequentially buckets of...

Shouldn't your servers be sweating?

Blog Oh yes, and liquid cooling. Not only would it make the server room a more pleasant place to work from a temperature point of view - many of the ones I've seen are freezing - it would mean less cooling, fewer fans, and - get this - much less noise.

RE: A new threat from the datacentre: you're making your staff deaf!

Blog Comment Something has just occurred to me about the cooling theme. Maybe there is a way to convert this heat into light before it gets too hot, then perhaps this light could be focused through a magnifier of some kind and ejected from the system, or even...

RE: Shouldn't your servers be sweating?

Blog Comment Creating cooling zones within the server itself also impacts the energy a system consumes not just the energy used to heat it up but the energy used to cool it down too, and then there is of course the question of water cooling too.

Sun christens its power-saving processor

Talkback This new technology has the potential to eliminate racks of web & blade servers with a single 1U high unit from SUN (with similar CPU power, vastly reduced power/cooling requirements, and tremendous complexity reduction!

More low-energy datacentres reach planning stage

Blog IBM's 6,000-sq.foot data centre, to be built in NY state, will cost US$12.4 million, and is to feature its own tri-generation electrical system, as well as including the latest generation of power-efficient server and cooling systems.

RE: Stirling work for cooling your chips
