An Inconvenient Truth: A Convenient Option?

Blog So I’m checking in for a BA flight this morning online and I notice that I’m now being offered the chance to offset my carbon emissions. A return to the East coast of the USA results in 1.32 tonnes of CO2 and the cost to offset this will apparently...

Are these new jobs?

Talkback Do these new Vista jobs offset all the jobs destroyed as W2K and XP become obsolete? Or is "creating jobs" just spin for all the work that IT staff are going to have to do to deploy Vista? Sounds like a euphamism for the upgrade treadmill to me.

Fly me and hang the environment

Blog Only 12 percent of managers in the sector intend to offset the carbon footprint created by long-haul flights, apparently. IT people don't care about the environment apparently, at least according to the annual survey by the Chartered Management...

TomTom Navigator 2

TomTom Navigator 2 image Member Review Some roads appear offset 20+ metres from their actual location which seems sloppy. The product is quite nicely finished and easy to use, but needs a couple of the rough edges filing down. Better topographical to 3D integration would be welcome.

Sun to demo 'green' thin clients to the G8

Talkback In a large organisation this can cause a massive increased demand for datacenter space with its associated power and cooling demands which significantly offset the savings at the front end. What they don't say is that Thin client technology shifts...

"Touchpads migrate to the side of the screen"

Talkback Fortunately, Linux allows me to turn off the trackpad, but I would dearly love a laptop with a trackpad offset to the extreme side. If only this were true! Most laptops still have the touch pad firmly in the middle.

Hundreds of exchanges fail BT trigger test

Talkback Turn around profit time is variable, and is always offset by the larger- more populated exchanges. There is with no doubt, economical reasons for BT not to roll out ADSL country wide, but as per usual, BT have yet failed to grasp the fundimentals...

End of the road for Win 98 support

Talkback Even this is offset by the fact that in 2 years time or so virtually no viruses etc.will be targetting win98 and they will work on it only purely by chance. This is not that significant. Don't let this panic you into going to Win XP unless you...

The joy of push email

Blog And any concerns about work-life balance are offset by the fact that CNET Networks' chosen network operator doesn't manage a signal in my rural retreat. We've been writing about push email for long enough, and now we ZDNet hacks have got shiny new...

'IT industry is ageist' says Intel chairman

Talkback Armed with such an understanding, IT departments can invest accordingly - in modern tooling, capable of bringing productivity gains to offset the loss of development staff, and in modern platforms, through application migration, thereby removing...

Inside the Linux arcana

Talkback With clustering and HA capabilities, Sun's longstanding reliability factor is offset by the cost. Folsom, what are you thinking? Sun holds an option to buy SCO stock at $1.83. If SCO wins, SCO's stock will skyrocket, and Sun will make out like a...

Rupert Goodwins' IDF Diary

Blog That impression is quickly offset by Maloney's message, which although spirited and uplifting contains something of the tensions one suspects exists within Intel when one corporate strategy is made to wrap up many different approaches.

Rupert Goodwins' Diary

Blog We know that the cool factor of owning a bit of genuine non-consumer tech is high: look at the success of the Freeplay radios, so there's every chance that with a bit of off-beat marketing some tidy sales of the Simputer over here could offset the...

Does TwitterGate point towards bigger Cloud security issues?

Blog Broadly speaking, the risks of attack are offset by the convenience of the services -- there is risk, but it’s worth taking for the upside. Twitter co-founder Evan Williams’ Google Apps account getting hacked has got a lot of coverage this week.

Rupert Goodwins' Diary

Blog We've seen recruitment problems with the police solved -- or at least offset -- by the appointment of swathes of Police Community Support Officers, who are trained and paid less than the true copper but have to deal with a lot of the same stuff.
