Rupert Goodwins' Diary

Blog The high-tech company that invented this idea chose to call it Safe Haven, and mindful of the need to protect their intellectual property in these challenging times promptly trademarked the name. The original press release therefore gave the name...

Marketing beats the better widget

Talkback Opera will not succeed against M$ not cause they haven't got a better browser - they probably do, I haven't looked at it for years but it is not hard to beat IE it is probably M$ weakest product. People are also cautious about downloading software...

BBC must drop Web 'entertainment'

Talkback I always directed my young children to the BBC website as a safe haven with high quality content. Have to start looking for somewhere else 'safe' for them to play. They were happy playing the games and browsing the other information.

Can IT keep up with malware authors?

Talkback Non-MS platforms haven't had that many problems - for years. This is not to say they're 100% safe (because they aren't) but in relative terms MS has a lot to answer for - and so do the CIOs/CTOs of this world who still chose this platform.

IE8 beta 2, feature complete. Launch event, best deleted.

Blog There was a guy from Digg who gave us a short talk on what Digg was "for those of you in the audience who haven't encountered Digg". There was a two-stage amusement, where Microsoft showed us that IE8 could highlight the real part of a URL to prove...

Rupert Goodwins' Diary

Blog In best Clint Eastwood stylee she rides into town, snatches the hapless toy from its fate and carries it to a safe haven on top of a stack of 100Mbps Ethernet switches. Fresh from my orgy of nerdiness last week, when I found and downloaded...

RE: Windows 7 on the Apricot netbook

Blog Comment The two elements which must have contributed to this slow down have to be all the patches and service packs to Windows and the increasing demand imposed on the system by the increasingly sophisticated protection necessary for a safe Internet...

Rupert Goodwins' Diary

Blog That love was reciprocated: the place proved a safe haven from the world when licensing hours were no longer your friend, a good place to meet a very wide variety of people of similar interests (drinking and not going to bed) and even (it was...

Microsoft admits targeting Wine users

Talkback Please note that once this registry key is set to indicate a non-M$ OS, *NONE* of the OS upgrades/patches will install, providing a safe haven for viruses and requiring users to call into M$ tech support ($200/hour) to be told how to edit their...

Is your anti-virus program still working?

Talkback I'm sure it must have affected people who haven't even noticed - set & forget non-technical users who rely on products like Zone Alarm to keep them safe. My Norton auto-protect feature suddenly stopped working even though it showed as being enabled...

Rupert Goodwins' Diary

Blog The rest of the day didn't go Microsoft's way either, with Vamos admitting he hadn't used a non-Microsoft browser since 1995 and Cisco saying that they had to use their own security package in conjunction with IE to make it safe.

Ubuntu Disk Problem

Processor benchmarks: Intel versus AMD

Talkback But at 2500+ (1834 MHz) with a Radeon 9800 pro my system is at full graphics 1024 X 768 in Far Cry so I haven't really needed this option at this point other than I know that my system can handle this under stock cooling.

Why SSD makers don't talk SSDs up

RE: Deploying education desktops - made easier

Blog Comment In the end, you will need to get them used to alternative software, as an 'escape clause' safe-guard. Also, as with anything, if you haven't developed expertise in a technology, you *may* have to seek external support.

Gizmo5 - The New Beta from The Gizmo Project

Blog This release follows in the 4.0 line, and as the last Gizmo 3 release was in June 2007, I think it is safe to assume that line has been retired in favor of this one. So far with this version, I haven't been able to get it to crash at all.

Should mobile developers look East for ARPU inspiration?

Blog Location-based services have for some time now been regarded as a safe bet on the ARPU hedge-fund scale. But don’t trust me, I topped up my pay-as-you-go Palm Treo with 50 quid in 2006 and haven’t been back to the Orange shop since.
