Notes On the HP 2133 Mini-Note

Blog Comment Hi Adam, Thanks for the explanation and information. I was aware that GL didn't have any effect on ordinary desktop rendering, that's why the 2133 works just great with Mandriva, Fedora, the "standard" Ubuntu distribution, and others.

Dell cans its Mini 9 netbook

Blog Comment The Vostro A90, which is basically the same thing, is available on Dell's website here: http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop-vostro-a90? c=us&cs=04&l=en&ref=lthp&s=bsd

Linux on the HP 2133 Mini-Note, Part 3

Blog Comment Hi Adam, thanks for the additional info. I will be more careful about how I describe the difference in the future. Based on my experience so far, I would certainly agree that the 2133's Chrome 9 adapter is "slightly quirky".

Linux on the HP 2133 Mini-Note, Part 3

Blog Comment Just a note: the openchrome driver included with MDV 2009 is in fact perfectly 'stable', it's just that that release of the driver doesn't support the particular (slightly quirky) Chrome implementation in the MiniNote.

Apple Mac mini: a first look

Talkback Mac Motherboard only thoughts. The comment about donating computers gave me a cause for thought. For Apple this is not a good idea, as most donated computers will be PCs, so the other areas of the world will be expanding their Windows share.

Weekend Success - Ubuntu 8.10 on the HP 2133 Mini-Note

Blog Comment Hi Jamie, did you get the Broadcom wireless working on Ubuntu 8.10? I gave up rather easily since I have a USB wireless device based on Railink which works a dream.

Is the Mac mini good value?

Talkback Every college student who has to submit papers in MS Office XP formats would have a Mac mini.within weeks. What would really make it a selling point is if Apple included OpenOffice.org (there is an OS X PPC version and has been for a while).

Weekend Success - Ubuntu 8.10 on the HP 2133 Mini-Note

Blog Comment Hi Moley, Yes, after I installed Ubuntu it came up with the "hardware drivers" dialog, and gave me a choice between the "Broadcom STA" drivers and the public "b43" drivers. I have tried both, and they both seem to work, at least in my first...

Weekend Success - Ubuntu 8.10 on the HP 2133 Mini-Note

Blog Comment You can see why an "average Windows user" would recoil in horror from Linux tales like this!

Weekend Success - Ubuntu 8.10 on the HP 2133 Mini-Note

Blog Comment So now I discover that using the 64 bit version is going to be really tricky! As a consequence I'm now downloading the 32bit distro, so that I may have a more gentle introduction!

Weekend Success - Ubuntu 8.10 on the HP 2133 Mini-Note

Blog Comment I've just shunted my Windows 7 install onto another machine, and installed Ubuntu 64 on my old acer ferrari test machine. Surprisingly (to me) the audio worked straight away as it would with vista or 7.

Weekend Success - Ubuntu 8.10 on the HP 2133 Mini-Note

Blog Comment @JGFuller - Yes, I can imagine that an ordinary Windows user, or any other kind of user, would be intimidated by situations such as I described. But I wouldn't expect them to need or want to do so, because the HP 2133 is sold with a perfectly good...

Weekend Success - Ubuntu 8.10 on the HP 2133 Mini-Note

Blog Comment The average Windows user would recoil in horror from some of the things I have had to do to get Windows upgrades to work! Let's face it. The 'average' Windows user doesn't want to install ANY operating system.

Weekend Success - Ubuntu 8.10 on the HP 2133 Mini-Note

Blog Comment @JGFuller- I downloaded the win7 beta, and installed on a spare computer. Could not find my nic card, or my SB audio card. Plus on every re-boot it would lose the video card driver, leaving me with a 640X480 Resolution.

Toshiba NB200 netbook, er, mini notebook

Blog Comment Thanks for the information. It looks like a decent netbook, but seems a bit "skimpy" for the price - specifically: only b/g wireless (not N), and while 1 GB memory and 160 GB disk are pretty typical for netbooks, the price is on the high end, so...

Is this why Dell ditched the Mini 12?

Blog Comment @Roger, nope - no chance whatsoever. Apple doesn't have any muscles to flex when it comes to Dell. The two companies are not partners, collaborators, or otherwise. What muscle do you speak of? There's no leverage!

Is this why Dell ditched the Mini 12?

Blog Comment Thanks for the information, David. Very interesting indeed. I am anxious to see what the "very trim price point" they mention turns out to be, especially internationally. If the price is right, it could really do some damage to the "netbook...
