I really think Habbo improved this since this article has been published.
As many "Habbos" I have often faced racist languages, cyber sex or other disgusting acts.
The hotel now has 180 trained Hobbas (moderators) which can receive calls from every single habbo user and help them. Each person calling receives an answer in the following 30 seconds after the call was sent.
The Safety Managers have edited a Hobba Handbook with all the laws a hobba should respect, they can also communicate using a forum in a secret URL. There is also a weekly newspaper which talks about how to protect yourself from the other users and keeps on repeating that no personnal details should be revealed. Miss McAuliffe has been Safety Manager for over a year if I'm right, after that Madam Newton followed and "hired" more volunteer and trained hobbas. Now another Safety Manager arrived and more and more hobbas are still hired.
Habbo Ltd makes its possible to make sure their virtual hotel stays "clean".

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
