Sounds to me like this whole issue makes ownership not mean a thing. Ok i buy a cd so i own it which means i can do whatever i want with it, but, i guess not. So what if i want to rip the album to MP3's, it's mine. But they don't want you to do that. Insted of being able to burn a new cd when the one you paid $20 gets scracthed or ruined, they want you to buy another one. Ok, here's all this grerat technology for using digital media and burning/copying cd's. Ok buy our DVD burners for $300 buy all the stuff that's out there to support the economy. BUT, don't use it or you'll get sued. Bull****

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
