My concern goes further in some ways than those mentioned in the article.

To an extent, if a retailer wants to scrutinise and analyse my behaviour within its stores, that is its right - I can always elect not to shop there if I have a problem with that.

However, why should the analysis stop there? In principle, once the technology is deemed 'acceptable' there is no reason why purchasers (particularly of niche or high-value products) should not be tracked outside the store, to see where else they shop for example or to trace them to their home address.

And for this privilege we must tolerate yet another piece of non-degradable packaging at the very time that so many of us are growing increasingly concerned at the volume of household waste produced and disposed of.
