Story: Linux developers shift the course of an industry
Yes, IBM has been a big driving force in Linux. However, Sir, Linux is NOT just a Server OS!!!!!!!! It is also very good on the desktop, and at home, as a Personal OS.
Sure, you have to check your hardware against the compatibility lists of the distributions (if you're smart), and make any changes needed. If you have an ISP that uses a proprietary dialer and/or interface, that is limited to Windows, and maybe Macintosh, you need to change (hear THAT, AOL??).
Linux has made amazing improvements in not so many years, unlike Windows, where 'improvements' are new features, ever more draconian EULAs, a subscription, Draconian Product Activation, DRM, Passport, and other things to tighten Microsoft's stranglehold on what you can do with your computer.
No, you can't play all of those wonder games in linux, but some you can, with things like WineX.
Linux has a long ways to go, like more hardware manufacturer support, porting apps, including games to linux, and so forth.
