Increasing the number of gTLD's isn't user-friendly - how many of us can recite all the existing 14(!) generic TLD's? The minutes from ICANN's meeting in Tunisia admit the most recent additions to the gTLD list "have faced significant acceptance problems."

I know of at least one pending patent that would allow a virtually unlimited number of domain names under .com TLD (or any other top level domain). This would remove the rational for cyber-squatting, support Small and Medium size Enterprise in their efforts to register suitable domain names, etc. Keeping the number of gTLD's to a minimum would help users maintain a cognative map of the Internet - supporting continued growth of the medium.

The current system can't protect trademark owners since, at least in the US, a large number of companies can own the same trademark - albeit on different products or services. Most companies however conduct business without the benefit of any trademark protection, and are left unprotected in any domain name dispute.
