Story: Parliament 'didn't understand RIP Act'
Simon Watkin is exactly right. The information sought is critical to investigating serious crime and terrorism - as well as helping public safety officials in time of emergency - and cannot be obtained any other way. Furthermore most of what is being requested in the way of record retention is simply normal business practice. Lastly, the Home Office is requesting only the tools that are available today to officials in just about every other country in the world. We no longer live in a world of just simple telephones. The authorities deserve more than antiquated tools - and RIPA provides what is needed today.
