Story: BT trigger levels scupper community broadband

It was always likely that BT would set trigger levels for all exchanges where they saw any possibility of providing adsl either commercially or with some funding or other support, the only uncertainty was timing.

All community-based projects need to make their plans in the expectation that market conditions will change and competition in one form or another will emerge. But it will be sad if people just throw in the towel as your report suggests has happened in the case you mention. Local community wireless or some other alternative will still be needed in most rural areas even after adsl arrives, to cover those who are too far from the exchange. RDAs, local authorities and other funding bodies should be focusing their attention on such needs, plus those relatively large communities that have relatively difficult-to-hit adsl targets because of backhaul costs.
