Story: Dell admits Indian mistake
Um...I guess there is more than a hundred thousand employees in India who work for Dell USA. Apart from Dell, we have a lot of other companies such as HP, Compaq, IBM, SBCGlobal, AoL, MCAfee, Microsoft, Lynksys, Norton Anti-virus and a long list employing millions of Indians to provide support to Home Users. A lot of home users are generally dumb and there isn't a need of debating on that. Most of the questions they have can be answered by any idiot. So why should the American brain be wasted on such jobs? And dont be so rude about Indians.
1. English education is available only to the affluent people in India. Indians in Tech Support are probably more wealthy than most of the Dell home users who are truck drivers or labourers. In such a case, one cannot expect them to listen to rude remarks and abuses that they have never had to hear in life.
2. Technical support personnel over there work in the night shifts and it is not really relishing to get abusive customers throughout the 10 hour shift.
3. Half of the customers who call dell support are Hispanics, Negroes or Indian-Americans with attitude. They are so rude and impossible to deal with.
On the other hand:
1. People in India don't realize that a large percentage of world achievers are Indians because one fifth of the world is filled with Indians. Hardly 4-5% of Indians are civilized. But that itself adds to over 55 million people. That is a huge number taking into account the sparse population of the rest of the world.
2. In India, people do not attempt to buy a computer when they don't know anything about it. There is a lot of difference between the educated and uneducated people in India. As a matter of fact, the educated people here show the same repulsiveness towards the uncivilized people the Americans showed toward the Red Indians a century ago. What I am trying to say here is the Indians who think Americans are fools fail to realize that they will choose to commit suicide rather than providing tech support to an Indian labourer; while it is a lot easier to deal with an American illiterate person. But having no experience of handling an uncivilized Indian, they fail to see the difference between the two. They assume that there are more computer literate Indians when they are wrong. Rather, you should say a majority of Indians who OWN a computer are computer illiterate.
Look at these figures: According to the 2004 census, the per-capita income of an American was around 45000 dollars per annum while that of an Indian was 620 American Dollars. The cost of an ordinary laptop in America is 400 dollars. But a laptop in India costs approx 750 dollars (approx 35000 Indian Rupees). Hence, no duffer or a street-loafer in India spends money on a computer. But any duffer or a beggar in America can afford a computer. So give up the notion that "Indians are computer-literate wheras Americans are not". This is rubbish.
Let me tell you, European-Americans are the sweetest people to handle. A majority of the dumb and difficult customers you get are likely to be Mexican immigrants (the worst of the lot!), black women and Indian immigrants.
So there is no point cursing each other. We should probably learn to live with it. :)
